Aim of the course: is to trace the re-emergence and development of drama in England
during the Middle Ages and Tudor period . The miracle, mystery and saints plays ,
moralities and interludes will be the main concern of the studies. Liturgical drama, folk
plays, and various May games and festivities will be dealt with before the in depth study of
the mentioned types of plays. The staging, performance, costume,acting-actors, audience
and other conventions related to each type will be analysed. The move from liturgical,
religious and allegorical plays towards secular, satirical and renaissance drama will be
especially emphasized.
Course outline:
Week I-II
Medieval background:social, historical,cultural, and religious conditions
Week III-IV Disappearance of drama, rituals, festivals, various performances and
entertainment, May games, folk plays Robinhood plays ,liturgical drama
development of mystery and miracle plays.

Early staging-setting, guilds’performances and cycles in relation to the
religious calendar.
Week V-VIII Study of the texts in English Mystery Plays, Peter Happe
Week IX-XI Morality plays;allegorical representation, roots in other non-dramatic
literary works, staging-setting, other aspects of dramatisation

NB. Due to circumstances changes may be made in the list of the primary works to be
studied
Method of instruction: The course will be conducted in lectures, paper presentations
and class discussions. The generic and background information will be in lectures. The
theoretic material will be supported with visual material. The students will each present
papers on the the mystery plays and on one morality play and/or an interlude . Each
student will hand in a formal research paper(double spaced,10 pages,MLA format)
comparing a mystery play of her/his own choice from three different cycles.
The students are expected to come to class having read ALL the primary texts, to do
research and secondary reading and to take part in class discussions.
Assessment: 20% presentations
20% formal term paper
20% midterm
40% final examination
