Tree & Shrub Care
Planting
Dig a hole twice as wide and only a deep as the depth as the root ball. In a clay-type
soil replace the existing soil from the hole with a compost mix to allow for proper
drainage. In a sandy-type soil combine compost with the existing soil at a rate of
50/50. Loosen roots of the root ball before placing in the hole. It’s a good idea to
backfill the hole about halfway, and then water the soil to help it settle before
filling the rest of the hole. Never step on the soil to firm it; this could damage the
root system.
Mulch
The purpose of mulch is to retain water, beautify the planted area and enhance the
soil. A natural shredded bark, cedar, or root mulch is best. Lay the mulch over the
planted area only about 3 inches deep. Mulch should surround, but not touch the
base of the shrub.
Watering
Drip irrigation or leaky hoses are the best way to water. Check area of soil with
finger to determine length of watering time, a timer might be helpful. If watering
by hand fill basin around the shrub, for larger shrubs fill twice. Be sure to check
soil during drought periods for extra watering.
