Santa’s Holiday Playlist Song 1: Deck the Halls Cast: Deck the halls with boughs of holly. Santa: Ho Ho Ho! I just love the end of the day after checking my lists not once, but twice, when I get to play all my favourite music on my trusty old phonograph. Cast: ‘Tis the season to be jolly. Mrs. Claus: Oh Santa, you’re so old-fashioned. Cast: Don we now our gay apparel. Santa: Oh, I know you think so, Mrs. C, but you can keep your fancy 8 track players and compact discs. You still can’t beat the sound of my old LPs. Cast: Troll the ancient yule-tide carol, fa la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la Scene 1 Santa: Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Oops! Sound effect CD track 16 Santa: Oh, dear! Oh, dear, what have I done? I’ve ruined my favourite record of all time. Mrs. Claus: Don’t worry, dear. We still have Perry Como’s Greatest Hits. Santa: But this was my favourite record - children singing my favourite holiday carols! A few elves and a couple of reindeer enter Elf 1: Hey, Mr. and Mrs. Claus. What’s up? Mrs. Claus: Oh Elfie. Santa is very upset because his old records are just wearing out and Christmas just isn’t Christmas without the music. Santa: That’s right dear. There are so many joys of the season. Elf 1: Like giving, caring and family togetherness. Elf 2: And don’t forget eating (holds up a big turkey leg) Santa: But it is the music that speaks to the heart. Oh dear, it is getting so hard to find records nowadays. Elf 2: Well, of course it is boss. Nobody listens to records any more. You’ve got to get with the program, Santa, and modernize. Santa: Modernize? Elf 3: That’s right, Santa. Records are a thing of the past. You need to get some CDs or an MP3 player to store all your favourite tunes. Then you can listen to them whenever you want to. Santa: CDs? MP3 player? What in the world are you talking about? You mean like cassette tapes? (all laugh) Rudolph: No! You see, Santa, with one of these new gizmos, you can store all of your favourite tunes and organize them in a “playlist” that you bring up whenever you’re in the mood for a different kind of music. Santa: Different kind of music? What are you talking about? There’s only one kind of music that really makes me happy. Dasher: But, we all have our favourite playlists, Santa, and maybe it’s time you did too. Santa: Well, I’ve never been afraid to learn new things. (All laugh) Mrs. Claus: Oh, Santa! Really! You still drive that same old sleigh you’ve always driven. Santa: But I like my sleigh, and besides, it only has 473 million miles on it. It’s just getting broken in! Elf 1: And those threads, Santa. They’ve got a few miles on them, too. Santa: Hey! So I like red! All: Obviously! Santa: Am I really that old-fashioned? Am I really that out of touch? Elf 2: Well, Santa, let’s just say you could use a little updating. Santa: Updating? Hmm. Well, I’m always glad to learn something new. Tell me about this playlist thing and I’ll try to figure it out. Elf 3: You see, Santa, with one of these gadgets, we can choose all of our favourite music and listen to it wherever, whenever. Rudolph: That’s right, Santa. For instance, the elves seem to really like Motown music. Elf 1: Yeah, Santa, ever since our long layover on the west coast last year, we just can’t get enough of that Vancouver City sound. Elf 4: It’s so balmy and warm there. Elf 5: For Canada. Elf 4: Everybody’s driving around in convertibles with the top down- even at Christmas time! Elf 2: So when we want to listen to our music, we just put on our headphones and scroll to our favourite playlist, all without a scratch. Santa: Hmm. Elf 3: Here, Santa! Try mine! I know you’re gonna love it. (Santa puts on headset) Elf 1: Now, I’ll just scroll down to “Elf Playlist” and push “play.” (Santa topples back into his chair and the stage is filled with elves as music starts.) Song 2: Merry Christmas from Vancouver City Bright lights Decked halls Evergreens White walls Lights strung Corn popped Carols sung Hard top Favourite time of year Listen, can’t you hear? I do love that city. Such nice kids! Elf 1: See, Santa, you don’t need those silly old records. Just keep that MP3 player for yourself and you’ll always have Motown whenever you like. Santa: But…But… Rudolph: No! No! That’s not the answer. Here, Santa, take a listen to my music. It has the true Christmas flavour! Dasher: Yeah, we reindeer have our own tunes that you are going to love! Mrs. Claus: Oh, I don’t know. Santa doesn’t like that song about Grandma getting run over very much. Steve: Oh, don’t worry Mr. C. Grandma is fine. Besides, our playlist is full of all kinds of great tunes we picked up last year when the sleigh stopped for refueling in Calgary, Alberta. Santa: Who are you? I don’t recognize you and I know all my reindeer by their first names. Steve: Stampede Steve’s my name and country crooning is my game. Sit back and relax Santa. I’ve got a jingle for you! Merry Christmas, now (Merry Christmas, now) Scene 3 Santa: Ho Ho Ho and yeehaw! That was fun! I can sure see why you reindeer like that country sound! Rudolph: Okay, so do you feel better now, Santa? I’ll be glad to download our Country Western playlist for you, so you can listen to it whenever you please. Santa: Well…I don’t know…It’s not quite… (Enter Crystal Snowflake) Crystal: Santa! Where on earth is everyone? (All roll eyes) Elf 4: Oh, boy! Here comes Crystal Snowflake! Elf 5: Dressed in her snow-white gown! Crystal: There’s no business like snow business! Vixen: Crystal thinks she’s a Broadway star! Crystal: I AM a Broadway star! New York just hasn’t discovered me yet! Comet: It’ll never be the same once they do. Crystal: I hear that Santa Claus is looking for some new music to listen to. Santa: Well, it’s not exactly that. It’s just that my old records are wearing out… Crystal: Don’t worry, Mr. C. I’ve got a playlist you’re gonna love! It’s called “Crystal Snowflake on the Great White Way!” Mrs. Claus: You mean you have your own Broadway album, Crystal? Crystal: Of course! Only it’s not an album, Mrs. C. It’s a playlist. And my playlist is nothing but Broadway show tunes. Every one of them is starring me – the one and only Crystal Snowflake! (places Santa’s MP3 player in a docking station) Crystal: Hmmm. Here. Those headphones aren’t big enough for Crystal’s music! Song 4: Broadway Lights Curtain’s up Lights are bright All are set for opening night People shout Hip hip hoo ray It’s Christmas on Broadway We’ve rehearsed almost a year Chorus line of Christmas cheer When you’re blue, nothing will do like Christmas on Broadway Tickets sold S.R.O Old Times Square is covered with snow Musical or drama play It’s Christmas on Broadway Seats are full, the theatre packed Everyone gets in the act When it snows, everyone goes for a Christmas on Broadway Hop on a bus or take a train Bring your hat and candy cane Crystal’s here to entertain (solo) With a Broadway melody A Broadway melody This is it Take your cue Leave your cares on Park Avenue This will be your lucky day, it’s Christmas on Broadway We’ve rehearsed for weeks and weeks Our bones are achin’ so are our cheeks Everyone knows when it snows, I like old… Everyone knows when it snows, I’m not cold (solo) Everyone knows when it snows, I like old Broadway (Crystal takes multiple bows) Scene 4 Captain: Who’s the man all dressed in red? You all look marvelous, Captain. I’m very proud of you. Captain: Sir, we understand you have a problem here. Santa: Well… Captain: Never fear, sir! We are here! Toy soldiers, are we ready to travel around the world with Santa, keeping him safe from enthusiastic parents and malls full of children? Soldiers: Sir! Yes sir! Santa: Well, I’ve never really minded the children… Captain: Are we ready to go down any chimney first, polish every muddy boot, and carry any stranded sleigh, in order for Santa to make his appointed rounds? Soldiers: Sir! Yes sir! Captain: So, how can we assist you, sir? Santa: Well, there’s nothing really important right now… Mrs. Claus: You see, Captain, Santa is upset because all of his records are getting so old that it’s very difficult for him to listen to his favourite music at the end of a long day of toy making and list checking. Elf 6: We’ve been trying to help him. We played our Motown playlist for him. Rudolph: And we shared our country hits. Crystal: All I can give is Broadway! If he doesn’t like Broadway, I don’t know what’s the matter with him. Captain: Soldiers, Santa needs music! (Soldiers scratch heads and look confused) Corporal: Permission to speak, sir. Captain: Yes, corporal? Corporal: Well, we toy soldiers have sort of put together our own little playlist of music that we really like. Captain: Really? Private: Yes sir! We gathered a lot of music when you gave us those days for R and R at the beach back in 1976. Santa: What kind of music is it, Corporal? Corporal: Oh, it’s just a little R and R music, Santa, sir. Santa: Rest and relaxation music? Private: Oh no, sir. If you please, sir. I’ll be glad to show you. Santa: Be my guest. (Santa hands him the MP3 player and Private puts it in the dock) Song 5: Just a Little “R and R” Just a little R and R, oh yeah Just a little R and R Just a little R and R, oh yeah Just a little R and R You might think that R and R means rest and relaxation But listen up to what I found on my last vacation I hit the beach out on patrol Found good ol’ rock’n roll That’s R and R (That’s R and R) I hit the beach out on patrol Found good ol’ rock’n roll That’s R and R (That’s R and R) Just a little R and R, oh yeah Just a little R and R Just a little R and R, oh yeah Just a little R and R You might find some peace of mind in jazz or a cappella But let me tell you, Santa Claus, I’m not that kind of fella When I need to take a break Goota shimmy, gotta shake That’s R and R (That’s R and R) When I need to take a break Goota shimmy, gotta shake That’s R and R (That’s R and R) Just a little R and R, oh yeah Just a little R and R Just a little R and R, oh yeah Just a little R and R Hup, 2, 3, 4 Hup, 2, 3, 4 Soldiers pick it up, 2, 3, 4 Single file or in a row In the rain or in the snow Marching ‘round the Christmas tree Be the best that you can be Just a little R and R, oh yeah Just a little R and R (ooo ooo oooo) Just a little R and R, oh yeah Just a little R Just a little R Just a little R and R Scene 5 Mrs. Claus: Fantastic! You soldiers are the sweetest things! (Soldiers get embarrassed) Captain: Thank you, Mrs. Claus. So, what do you think, Santa, sir? Will the toy soldiers’ playlist of Rock and Roll favourites be enough to keep you happy? Santa: Oh, Captain, I do so appreciate the music you soldiers have gathered on your playlist, and the play on words for “R and R” is sheer genius, but… Captain: No need to explain, sir. We understand! They’re not your favourite tunes. Santa: I guess that’s right, Captain. But I really do appreciate your sharing. After all, that’s what Christmas is all about. Captain: Company, about face! Forward march! (Soldiers march off) Captain: Who’s that man all dressed in red? Soldiers: Santa is all dressed in red. Captain: Who will sing with all they’ve got? Soldiers: We will sing, like it or not! Santa: Well, it is so wonderful that all of my friends are trying to make me happy by sharing their favourite music with me. Mrs. Claus: But it just isn’t the same, is it, Santa? Santa: Oh, I like all their music, and they are so enthusiastic. But, it’s just that…well, I’ve always loved…you know… Mrs. Claus: Yes, I know… Song 6: The Sounds of Christmas Children playing in the snow People racing to and fro Laughing ‘neath the mistle toe These are the sounds of Christmas These are the sounds of Christmas Singing carols full of mirth Ringing bells for all they’re worth People pray for peace on Earth These are the sounds of Christmas These are the sounds of Christmas Ring a ling (Yes, ring a ling) Hear them ring (Oh, hear them ring) Christmas has begun (Listen now, Christmas has began) Come and sing (Yes, come and sing) Let us bring (Oh, let us bring) Joy to every one (Joy to every one) Singing carols full of mirth Ringing bells for all they’re worth People pray for peace on Earth These are the sounds of Christmas These are the sounds of Christmas These are the sounds, the beautiful sounds These are the sounds of Christmas Scene 6 Santa: Oh, Mrs. Claus, you always know just what to say to cheer me up and remind me of the truly important parts of the holiday season. Mrs. Claus: Oh, Santa. I don’t think you’d ever forget that. Santa: I guess I can get used to all of these “playbills” or “mpgs” or “uPods” or whatever. I will miss my old records and favourite songs, though. Mrs. Claus: Well, I was waiting to give this to you when you left on Christmas Eve, but I guess there is nothing wrong with an early gift. Santa: Mrs. C, what are you talking about? (All other characters enter stage) Mrs. Claus: I’ve put together a little playlist of your favourite holiday songs just for you. Santa: Really? Elf 8: You’re going to love it! It’s called… All: Santa’s holiday playlist! Santa: Ho Ho Ho! This is wonderful! After all, music is at the heart of Christmas.
