1.6 Long Term Cause #3- Alliances
Notes:
In the early 1900's, there were two main groups of alliances in Europe.
The first alliance was called the “Triple Entente.” This alliance was between Russia,
France and Britain. The counties in the Triple Entente are also known as the Allies.
The second alliance was called the “central powers.” This alliance was between
Germany, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the Ottoman Empire.
There were other smaller countries involved in both of these alliances.

Notes:
On June 28th, 1914, the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, Archduke Ferdinand, was
assassinated by a Serbian during a visit to Bosnia.
Austria-Hungary blamed Serbia for this attack.
Russia had an alliance with Serbia. Russia said it would protect Serbia from AustriaHungary.
Russia began to prepare for war.
