Real-life Life Rounding Experience By Dr. Alice C. Raganas A t first, I didn’t realize the importance of rounding numbers, which our Math teacher Mrs. dela Cruz taught us one day. I learned how to round whole numbers. In fact, I got a perfect score in our formative test after the discussion. But still, I didn’t know the importance of rounding whole numbers. Until one day when I realized that in real life, we often did not need an exact numerical answer. Usually a good approximation would do. One day, my mom gave me P20.00. I was going to buy something in the convenience store. I didn’t care what the exact total bill would be. The only thing I wanted to know was whether I would be spending more than P20.00 or not. I also wanted to find out whether my money was enough to buy the items from the grocery store. The items I put in my basket cost the following: P2.50, P5.75, P1.25, P1.85, P3.50, and P1.50. With these costs, I want to know if I have enough money to pay for all these. To find out, I rounded each number to the nearest peso, getting the following number of pesos: P3.00, P6.00, P1.00, P2.00, P2.00, P4.00, and P2.00. Now, I could add these easily, getting P20.00. So my P20.00 was more than enough to pay all the items I got. MATH Talino Grade 3 Vol. 13 No. 1a e-Pages 1 The following day, Mom, Dad and I had dinner at a restaurant. Mom asked me to check the bill the waiter left on our table. I told my mother that something was wrong with the computation of the bill. She asked the waiter to recheck his computation. The waiter took the bill. After a while, the waiter discovered that he wrote one and carried three in the tens column instead of writing three and carrying one on the tens column. From then on, I realized the importance of rounding whole numbers in real life. We can easily check whether the answers are correct or do they make sense by rounding or approximation. Rounding small whole numbers is as important as rounding greater whole numbers. Just like when my parents bought a TV set in an appliance store. The TV set cost P23 561. My father told the saleslady that he had P24 000 on hand. I knew that if I would round P23 561 to the nearest thousand, I will get P24 000, because P23 561 was closer to P24 000 than P23 000. And I was right. My mother said that my father’s money was enough to buy the appliance. The saleslady offered an appliance with a lesser price. It cost P23 453. I thought my father would get the one that had a lower price. If he did, he had more than enough money to buy the appliance for P23 453. If I would round P23 453 to the nearest thousand, it would be P23 000, because P23 453 is closer to P23 000. REMEMBER! To round a number to any place, change all digits to the right of that place to zero. Add one to the digit in that place if the digit to its right is five or more.
