Success Criteria How to do it: I can round decimal numbers to the

Experience & Outcome: MNU 2-01a
I can use my knowledge of rounding to routinely estimate the answer to a problem,
then after calculating, decide if my answer is reasonable, sharing my solution with
others.
Success
Criteria
How to do it:
I can round
decimal
numbers to
the nearest
whole
number.
Look at the number after the decimal point. If it is 1, 2, 3 or 4 then leave the whole number as it
is. If it is 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 then add 1 onto the whole number.
I can round
decimal
numbers to
one decimal
place.
Look at the second number after the decimal point. If it is 1, 2, 3, 4 then leave the first number
after the decimal point as it is. If it is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 then add 1 onto the first number after the
decimal point.
23.4  23
56.8  57
102.5  103
8.23  8.2
17.87  17.9
9.34  9
71.49  71
138.82  139
5.98  6.0
The 8 adds 1 to the first
decimal place. This turns 9
into 10. 5.98 becomes 6.0
The 0 is required to give the
answer 1 decimal place.
I can
estimate to
the nearest
whole
number.
Round each one to the nearest whole number then carry out the sum.
I can use
my
estimate to
decide if my
answer is
reasonable.
Compare the estimate to the final answer and they should be close.
5.3 + 18.8  5 + 19 = 24
7 x 4.2  7 x 4 = 28
7 x 4.2 = 29.4
This is a reasonable answer.
5.3 x 18.8  5 x 20 = 100
Change 18.7 to 20 as
it is easier to multiply.
Experience & Outcome: MNU 3-01a
I can round a number using an appropriate degree of accuracy, having taken into
account the context of the problem.
Success
Criteria
How to do it:
I can round
a number
taking into
account the
problem.
When you need a resource, you need to round
the number up even if the numerical rounding
should be down.
When using money, you only need 2 decimal
places.
If 4.3 rolls of wallpaper are required to
decorate a room, you would buy 5 rolls of
wallpaper not 4.
If 2 litres of milk costs £1.29 in Sainsbury’s,
£1.23 in Tesco, £1.20 in Asda and £1.35 in M&S,
the average cost would be £1.2675. We would
round to £1.27.

Experience & Outcome: MNU 4-01a
Having investigated the practical impact of inaccuracy and error, I can use my knowledge
of tolerance when choosing the required degree of accuracy to make real life calculations.
Success
Criteria
How to do it:
I can use
the context
to decide
on the
degree of
tolerance.
Consider the context and decide how important it is to be accurate.

If a 5 kg bag of potatoes contains 5.4 kg, this is an acceptable tolerance as the impact of this error
is not significant in this context.
If a 5 ml dose of medicine contains 5.4 ml, this is not acceptable as the impact of this error could
be significant.
