ACTIVITIES AND GAMES WITH FRACTION CARDS In each case, the learners will need an appropriate selection of fraction cards. These can also include decimal and percentage equivalents, as well as diagrams and fractions shown on number lines. Activities might include: • Sorting fraction cards with the same denominator into pairs that make up one whole e.g. 1/3 and 2/3 • Comparing cards with the same denominator and putting them in order • Comparing cards with the same numerator and putting them in order • Sorting fraction cards, either with the same denominator or with different denominators, into sets that make up one whole e.g. 1/10 and 3/10 and 6/10 • Sorting cards into fractions greater than or less than half • Finding two fraction cards that add up to the same fraction as a third fraction card e.g. 1/5 and 1/10 = 3/10 • Matching fraction cards with a variety of representations of fractions, e.g. , vulgar fractions, shapes, decimals, number lines GAMES WITH FRACTION CARDS o Matching equivalent fractions – this can be played as ‘Snap’, or ‘Find the Pairs’ – the cards are laid out face down, and each player turns over two cards, trying to find a matching pair. If they do not match, they are replaced as before. Each correctly matching pair is removed, and the player with the most pairs wins. • ‘Going for the Highest’ - for a group of three players. The range of fraction cards selected will depend on what the learners are able to manage. Deal four fraction cards to each player; each chooses a card to lay down. When each has played one card, the person who played the highest card wins the set. Game continues until all cards are played, winner is the one with most sets. • ‘Higher or Lower’ - the first plays a card then says whether the next person has to play a higher or lower card. First to play all cards wins.
