Objective: The Clara Fractions game will help students practice converting
improper fractions to mixed numbers. Students will be able to correctly convert
improper fractions into mixed numbers.
Common Core Standards:
4.NF.1 Explain why a fraction a/b is equivalent to a fraction… Use this principle to
recognize and generate equivalent fractions. *This objective involved finding
the equivalent of an Improper Fraction by changing it to a Mixed Number.
5.NF.1 Part of objective 5.NF.1 is to be able to convert Improper Fractions to Mixed
Number in order to solve addition and subtraction problems involving fractions
with like and unlike denominators.
Warm-Up Activity #1:
As a warm-up activity prior to playing the “Clara Fraction” game, have your
students watch an instructional fraction video titled “Converting Improper
Fractions to Mixed Numbers”. Watching this video is a great way to either
introduce or review the concept of converting improper fractions to mixed
numbers. Simply, use the following link to quickly access this video.

Warm-Up Activity #2:
Go to the following link and select the “Grade 5 Common Core: Converting Improper
Fractions to Mixed Numbers” drill for your students’ grade level. The interactive
problems can be worked by 4th or 5th graders as a whole group either on an
interactive white board or via a projector as a way to review problem solving skills.

Main Activity:
Now that you have watched the fraction video and warmed up with one or more
interactive problem solving drills with your class you are now ready to play the
“Clara Fraction” math game. First, watch the instructional video at
http://mrnussbaum.com/clarafraction/ . This game could be played as a whole
group using an interactive white board or utilizing projector. Or, this game could be
played in a computer lab setting where each student has their own individual
computer to play “Clara Fraction”.
