NUMERATOR AND DENOMINATOR eg 5/8 5 is the numerator; (how many parts of the whole that have been used) 8 is the denominator (how many parts the whole is divided into) 2. SIMPLIFY – getting the fraction to the smallest possible number For example: 15/30 I look at 15 and say it consists of (15 x 1; 5 x 3); I choose the biggest number that will also go into 30. In this case, 15, 5 and 3 will go into 30. I choose 15 because it is the biggest number. You can choose the other numbers, but then you have to simplify more times. In Maths we always look at the quickest way to do something. Do the following sums in your exercise book : simplify Exercise 1 a) 14/22 b) 25/35 c) 9/21 d) 10/30 e) 18/54 f) 7/21 g) 22/33 h) 10/100 i) 36/48 j) 12/16 a) 16/32 b) 25/65 c) 66/77 d) 36/52 e) 16/42 f) 9/36 g) 5/9 h) 3/9 i) 20/25 j) 12/15 Exercise 2 11 3. OF For example: find ½ of 16 Say to yourself: 16 divided by 2 (Answer is 8) Then you say: 8 x 1 = 8 (which is your answer) For example: find ¾ of 24 Say to yourself: 24 divided by 4 (Answer is 6) Then you say: 6 x 3 = 24 (which is your answer) Exercise 1 a) 1/8 of 24 b) 1/9 of 18 c) 1/3 of 15 d) 1/11 of 55 e) 1/12 of 144 f) 3/5 of 25 g) 4/9 of 36 h) 2/3 of 18 i) 6/8 of 48 j) 3/11 of 77 4.
