RAPID SURVEY ON EXPORT OF LIVE ANIMAL FROM PAKISTAN AND ITS IMPACT ON LOCAL MARKET AND PRODUCTION SYSTEM JUNE 2010 BY DR.MMUHAMMADIQBAL SHAHID DDO/PLANNING OFFICER DR.IFTIKHAR AHMED ARQUM PLANNING OFFICER KHALID MEHMOOD CHAUDHRY DIRECTOR DIRECTORATE OF PLANNING AND EVALUATION CELL L&DD PUNJAB, LAHORE INTRODUCTION. Livestock is an important sector of Pakistan economy. Pakistan is rich in Livestock wealth in terms of number of species and breed as well as their production. Buffalo and cow are primarily kept for milk production with beef as an important by-product. Sheep and Goat are reared for meat production with wool and milk as by-product. Camel is kept for multipurpose, in the arid areas and desert region for the country. As the production potential of current dairy animal is low and pace of genetic improvement is very slow, we need to make assessment of our national milk requirement and supply of milk to run our growing dairy industry and meat consumption. Dairy sector in Pakistan consist mainly upon subsistence holding with minimum trend for commercialization. Rapid urbanization trend coupled with increased per capita income resulted in significant increase in demand for milk and meat and their products in the urban areas. METHODOLOGY a. The impact is of both financial and non-financial types: Financial impact: The economic impact of the export of one large animal from Pakistan is about 30,000/ per animals and small animal is about 3,000/ per animal which clearly indicate the impact which is contributing towards the export of live animals (253000) whereas the export of live animals from Pakistan to aboard during 2009-10 is 13.95 Million US Dollar These figures indicate the alarming situation and need of the hour to take steps to enforce the export policy.. Non- Financial Impact: The quantity of the animals in the Pakistan is declining day by day and quality of the meat is deteriorating with the passage of time. The consumer is handicapped by the butchers and meat suppliers. The protein requirements of the populace are also not fulfilled which lead to the malnutrition in the Pakistan. Moreover high potential is being drain out from the country, however large number of live animals are being exported through smuggling. RECOMMENDATION/ SUGGESTIONS The export policy of live animals should be reviewed. The value addition of meat and their by products should be encouraged instead of live animals export. The check points in the different exit spots of the District/ division levels should be established to monitor/check the mobility of animals. There should be limit of export of live animals from these exist points. The export procedure should be simplified to control smuggling of animals. 8 MOVEMENT OF LIVE ANIMAL FROM PUNJAB BY CHECK POST WISE No. of animal drain out/week S.
