Chinese Auction/Gift Exchange Rules
1. Everybody brings one $20.00 gift, wrapped.
2. Everyone participating in the gift exchange is expected to stay all the way to the end. If you
must leave before the end of the exchange, you must return your gift to the gift pile even though it
is open.
3. The person who draws number 1 takes a gift from the pile, opens the gift and sits down with
the gift clearly visible in their lap or on the table.
4. Then number 2 takes a gift from the pile and opens it OR takes the gift from number 1, and sits
down. If number 1’s gift was taken, then #1 gets to pick another gift from the pile and open it. #1
cannot take back the gift that #2 just took away---at this time.
5. Now number 3 can take a gift from either the gift pile or from #1 or #2. In the case of taking
the gift from #1 or #2, then #1 or #2 will get to go to the pile for another gift or take a gift from
another person, but cannot take the gift back that was just taken from them.
6. This continues until the very last person has the choice of all the previous gifts or the one gift
remaining in the pile. Since gifts may change hands a number of times and we don’t want to take
all night, we will limit your decision making to 30 seconds. If you take someone else’s gift, they
will then have 30 seconds to decide whether to take a gift from the pile or a gift from another
person and so on until every person has a gift.
7. Now that everyone has the gift of their dreams, number 1 may exchange their gift (which has
probably been taken more times than anyone else’s) with anyone in the room.
REMEMBER: This is for fun and to remind us that it is the Spirit of Giving and Love for One
Another that this Season is all about. So no coveting, yelling or pulling of hair is permitted.
