TRISP Masters Level Series
in Intersubjective Self Psychology
The TRISP Masters Level Series is a continuing education series for therapists
who have a strong psychoanalytic background and want to develop their
understanding of self psychological and intersubjective clinical practice.
Participants will study self psychological and intersubjective reformulations of the
central concepts in psychoanalysis: the listening stance of the therapist, the
analytic situation, transference and countertransference, resistance and defense,
dreams and the unconscious. In theory classes participants will focus on the
most central papers in the self psychology and intersubjectivity literature and in
small group discussions participants will apply the theories to their work, thereby
developing a firm understanding of an intersubjectively conceptualized self
psychological treatment. The Masters Level Series is open to licensed mental
health practitioners who have completed a four-year psychoanalytic training
program and to qualified clinicians who have a minimum of ten years postgraduate clinical practice.
The complete series consists of four courses: two theory courses and two case
discussion courses. The theory courses take the student from the core texts in
self psychology and intersubjectivity through to the most current writings shaping
the discourse in the field today, including the relationships among self
psychological, intersubjective and relational theories. The case discussion
courses provide opportunities for in-depth peer discussion of case material. All
courses are taught by the most senior TRISP faculty. Students who are
interested in expanding their training through clinical supervision may arrange for
private supervision. All participants in the Masters Level Series are eligible to
take TRISP Special Topics Courses in Self Psychology and Intersubjectivity at
the TRISP member rate. All TRISP members are eligible to take courses in any
one year series at the reduced member rate.
Courses are offered Wednesday evenings at 7:30 PM. All classes are held in
private offices in Manhattan. Depending on enrollment we may open a Friday
morning section for those who cannot make an evening class.

Fall Courses
Core Papers in Self Psychology and Intersubjectivity – In this
course students will study the core self psychological and intersubjective
literature. Readings include Kohut’s papers on empathy, selfobject transference,
and narcissistic rage, self psychological papers on optimal responsiveness,
leading and trailing edge, and hope and dread, as well as Stolorow et al.’s
articles on the intersubjective perspective. Discussions will focus on integrating
self psychological and intersubjective theory into students’ established theoretical
bases.
Peer Group Case Discussion I – In this course students will share case
material, applying the concepts studied in the theory class to the practice of
intersubjective self psychology. Discussions are led by senior TRISP faculty and
aim to illuminate the value of an intersubjective self psychological orientation to
clinical work.
Spring Courses
Contemporary Readings in Intersubjective Self Psychology – In
this course senior TRISP faculty members will present their current writings and
ideas in development. Students will thus have the opportunity to be exposed to
and discuss the most cutting edge thinking in self psychology and
intersubjectivity.
Peer Group Case Discussion II – This course is a continuation of the Fall
Semester Peer Group Case Discussion class. Also led by senior faculty, it aims
to bring the most contemporary theoretical developments in intersubjective self
psychology to bear on the direct clinical situation.

Fees
Tuition is $550 per eight-week course. If a full year’s tuition is paid by September
1st tuition will be $2000 for all four series courses. There is a non-refundable $50
annual registration fee for all participants.
TRISP members in good standing may take any Masters Level Series course at
the reduced rate of $450 per course.
Please note…
Classes will run based on enrollment.
In order to enhance the classroom experience we aim to facilitate levels of
discussion appropriate to all participants involved. For this reason, while we
encourage each applicant to apply to the series that seems most consistent with
his or her background in self psychology and intersubjectivity as well as with
years of clinical experience, we may recommend an alternative class placement
based on a combination of prior training, prior experience, and class make-up.
