Lok Nayak Hospital
Aims and Objectives of the Organization
The Chief Objective of this Hospital is to provide adequate care and treatment to its patients free of
costs (within the limits imposed by scarce resources. Its principal product is medical, surgical and
Nursing Service to the patients and its central concern is the life and health of the patients. This Hospital is
committed to provide quality health care services free of cost without any discrimination to all (except CT
Scan, nursing home etc.).
Almost all specialties are providing services in the out patient deptt. (OPD) and admission is done
in various wards for 1400 beds. Patients are seen in OPD and in casualty (emergency) for treatment and
admission are done, if necessary. Casualty & Emergency function round the cock (24 Hours) under the
supervision of senior doctors.
Mission/Vision: -
The vision is to cater to the health needs of all and provide the best of medical care
services. To meet these challenges the hospital has under the able leadership and guidance,
taken up a prestigious plan to continue to be the leader in providing excellent medical care
facilities in various domains of health. Various specialties, subspecialties and super
specialties have been introduced since inception and are being strengthened. However, with
burgeoning population in Delhi and resulting pressure on health services and hospitals, there
is a constant need of expansion and increase in number of beds. In last 8 years, foundation
stones of a number of multistoried blocks were laid and these are on the verge of completion.
These blocks are well equipped with state of the art, infrastructure and technology. Various
national health programmes are implemented through this hospital. Also, IEC activities are
undertaken regularly to create awareness in the public on the various aspects of Health and
to equip people in taking primary preventive health steps.
Brief history and background for its establishment
The starting point of this hospital goes back to the year 1930 when a building was
constructed as barracks to house some of the defense personnel of British Empire. There is a
plaque at the entrance to this hospital that commemorates the start of this building in the
year 1930. The stone of this building was laid on 10th January, 1930 by the then Viceroy and
Governor General of India Lord Irwin. The architect of this building is typically British and
more so at the main entrance of the building. The main entrance of the building is still
preserved in its original glory and is currently the office of the Medical Superintendent of
Lok Nayak Hospital – The present name for the old Irwin Hospital. 5-6 years after the
commissioning of these barracks, it was felt necessary that a hospital should be started in
the center of Delhi. These barracks were therefore converted into a General Hospital in 1936
with 320 indoor beds. The hospital was named Irwin Hospital after the name of the then
Viceroy Lord Irwin.
Lok Nayak Hospital as it stands now is a premier public hospital under govt. of NCT of
Delhi with present bed strength of 1400. During these six decades of its existence this
hospital has grown enormously in its size and dimensions so as to cope with the growing
needs of ever increasing population of this capital city. The hospital renders secondary and
tertiary care through a team of dedicated and highly qualified medical, Para-medical and
technical staff supported by sophisticated network of specialized laboratories. The
catchment area of the hospital includes the most thickly populated old Delhi areas
including Jama Masjid and Trans-Yamuna area. However, with the opening of the Guru
Teg Bahadur hospital, the pressure from the population of Trans Yamuna area has
considerably reduced. On the other hand patients attending the hospital from the
neighbouring states and other parts of the city have increased manifold. This shows the
popularity of the hospital in terms of various services provided in the hospital. The hospital
provides the general medical care encompassing all the departments like Medicine,
Surgery, Gynecology, Pediatrics, Burn and plastics and others etc. It is the first teaching
hospital to have started a department of occupational and environmental health to dealing
with emerging occupational and environmental health hazards. The department supervises
and monitors the on going bio-medical waste management programme as well as offers
training to hospital employees to ensure safe bio-medical waste disposal. It also furnishes
advanced facilities like dialysis, respiratory care, plastic surgery, lithotripsy, and others.
