Monday---Unit 23 Y as a Vowel Review and Unit 24 Lesson 1: Vowel Team
–ie
Unit 23: Class will review y as a vowel on the end of a word with worksheet
23-19. Review the rules that a y on the end of a 1 syllable word says the long
I sound and y on the end of a 2 syllable word says the long e sound. Teacher
will place worksheet 23-19, 20 under the document camera. Students will
review reading y as a vowel words and sentences on the sheet.
Teacher will place the story, “Andy’s Candy Shop” under the document
camera. Students will practice reading and discussing the story. This story
will be sent home for reading homework.
Unit 24: Class will discuss again that a vowel team works together. In this
lesson you will study vowel teams.
1. A vowel team always has 2 vowels.
2. In a vowel team only one vowel speaks.
3. 4 of the 5 vowels have vowel teams. The vowel u does not have a
team.
Teacher will display vowel team ie, worksheet 24-5 and discuss
1. The vowel I has only one team and it only comes at the end of the
word. That is why there is a dash.
2. The only vowel that speaks is the i. The I says its long sound.
Students will skywrite ie. Students will say dash, letter names and then
image diacritical mark over the vowel I while saying i.
Teacher will display the vowel teams sheet 24-3 and place the –ie vowel
team on the sheet.
Teacher will tell students that the vowel team ie is found in only 4 practical
words: die, tie, lie, pie.
Teacher will place worksheet 24-7 under the document camera and students
will practice reading the ie words and sentences.

die, tie, lie, pie. Students will skywrite –ie 3 times.
Class will also review –ie by reading words and sentences on worksheet 247 that will be placed under the document camera.
Class will review ai vowel team with worksheet 24-13 and 24-3 to discuss
that the ai vowel team comes at the beginning of a word or in the middle of a
word. Students will skywrite ai 3 times.
Students will also practice ai by rereading words on worksheet 24-15 and
will also read ai picture words on worksheet 24-17.
Class will review the –ay vowel team spelling with worksheets 24-13 and
24-3 to discuss that the –ay vowel team comes at the end of a word or
syllable. Students will skywrite the –ay spelling 3 times.
Students will also review ay by reading worksheet 24-19 under the
document camera and discuss the words divided into syllables on this page.
Students will review long a by reading long a words on worksheet 24-23
under the document camera and discussing the position of long a spelling by
checking the position in the words.
Teacher will place the story, “Rays” under the document camera. Class will
read and discuss the story. Oral readers will read. Teacher will ask students
to listen and picture the story as she reads. Then students will complete a
short comprehension quiz over the story and may use the story while doing
so because teacher will leave it under the document camera during the quiz.
Teacher will take up the quizzes and class will use the story to discuss what
answers that they should have marked on the quiz.
Students will complete a spelling assessment over the following words: my,
try, sky, happy, pony, baby, candy, curly, pie, die, snail, chain, paid, remain,
say, today, birthday, maybe, yesterday, Friday.
