CASA Infant and Preschool Services is a multidisciplinary team of professionals who work with families and the community to promote mental health in infants and children up to 5 years of age. The team helps families who bring their young children for assessment and treatment to recognize their child’s strengths and develop an understanding of their challenges. Mental health intervention can improve the social and emotional well being of young children by strengthening their relationship with caregivers and by supporting caregivers to promote age appropriate skills in the child. Early detection and treatment provides critical support to young children and their families when they need it most, and when it can make a difference to the child’s first impressions of the world and his/her response to it. When You Bring Your Infant or Preschool Child to CASA’s Infant and Preschool Services: He or she is assessed by a mental health therapist who is a member of a multidisciplinary team who specialize in Infant/Preschool mental health. The multidisciplinary team consists of nurses, social workers, psychologists, and psychiatrists. The initial assessment and treatment plan is presented to the multidisciplinary team for review, discussion, and recommendations. The mental health therapist provides intervention for the infants and their families. Treatment strategies may include a combination of the following services: Parent Support/Education Child Behaviour Management Parent-Child Therapy Play Therapy Family Therapy With the family’s permission, the team works closely with other community professionals to support the child and family. Head Start CASA therapists provide support to the Head Start children, parents and staff at a variety of sites around Edmonton. Services may include: observation and assessment consultation and conferencing education and training for parents and staff referral to clinical services Home Visitation The primary goals of the partnership with Alberta Health Services, Home Visitation are: early identification of mental health issues expand knowledge of infant mental health improve service coordination and access Partnerships The team partners with physicians, pediatricians, hospitals, Public Health Centers, daycares, preschools, as well as early education and early intervention programs. How to Refer: Children under the age of 5 years old are referred directly to CASA by calling 780 410 8483 to arrange for a referral form to be sent to the family or by printing an intake form available on our website. There are no fees charged for services provided to CASA. Medicolegal (custody and access) services are not provided.
