Perinatal Depression:
Recognizing and Treating Depression
During Pregnancy and Postpartum
October 23, 2014
9 am to 4:30 pm
Target Audience
This program has been planned for mental health,
substance abuse, health and human service
professionals and psychologists who work with this
population.
Program Description
Depression during pregnancy and the postpartum
is a widespread, serious heath problem for women,
infants, and families. This workshop will explore the
epidemiology of perinatal depression including
cultural, risk, and protective factors that influence
the onset and course of this disorder. Assessment
of depression during pregnancy and postpartum will
be covered using the DSM-IV-TR and other
empirically supported assessment tools. Differential
diagnosis will focus on the comorbidity of
symptoms related to depression and pregnancy as
well as differentiating between normal mood
changes and postpartum depression. An overview
of empirically supported interventions will be
presented as well as a basic introduction to
engaging and treating women diagnosed with
perinatal depression focusing primarily on
techniques related to interpersonal psychotherapy.
Speaker
Betsy (Sarah E.) Bledsoe, Ph.D., M.Phil., M.S.W.,
is an Associate Professor at the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work. She
has worked as an outpatient therapist and project
coordinator in Pittsburgh, PA where the focus of her
work was using Interpersonal Psychotherapy to
treat depression during pregnancy and prevent
postpartum depression. Before moving to Chapel
Hill, she studied in New York at Columbia
University where she had a predoctoral training
fellowship from the National Institute for Mental
Health. Much of her work at Columbia focused on
evidence based practices for perinatal depression.
Dr. Bledsoe is currently working on a project
addressing the risks and available evidence based
interventions for adolescents with perinatal
