The daily requirements of a lactating animal can be divided into following two parts:I.
Maintenance requirements.
II.
Production requirements.
In general, the maintenance requirements are met through the feeding of roughages (green
fodders and dry roughages) while the production requirements are worked out keeping in view the
milk yield and milk fat contents and are met through the concentrate mixtures. The concentrate
mixture having 16-17 % crude protein and 70 % total digestible nutrients is recommended for dairy
animals. According to the NRC (1989) 0.343 (kg) of TDN and 96 (g) of crude protein is needed by
the animal for one kg of milk production with 4.5 % fat contents (Annexure-I).
One kg ration for every three liter of milk is being used at the Livestock Farms since long
time. This much allowance does not meet the production requirement of animal but is being given
keeping in view the limitation of budget at the farm.
Moreover, the nutritive values of summer fodder, especially the protein contents are almost
half as compared to winter fodders. That is why this much allowance becomes necessary especially
during this period. So, the use of ration above one third of milk production is justified especially in
the months of June, July and August, etc where there is less yield of fodder and nutritive value is low
(Annexure-II).
