Kelloway alias Stowford/Stafford By Sherrill U. Williams, Genealogist Callaway Family Association We have played around with this family, discussed it, pondered it – but, we have really never dissected it and examined it for the “nitty gritty.” Let us do that now. There are two pedigrees in the Visitations of Devon. One is titled “Kelloway of Stowford.” The other is titled “Stafford of Stowford.” The Kelloway pedigree lists 10 generations from the first man – William Kelloway – to Philip who married Alice Yeo. There is absolutely no information provided for most of the Kelloways (dates, marriages, etc) in the lineage until we get down to Thomas Kelloway/Ann Copleston. At that point we can switch over to the Stafford pedigree and get a date. Philip Stafford was 30 years old when his father, Thomas, died in 1502/3 (Jan 18), so Philip was born about 1473, and he died in 1538. Using our pre-agreed upon formula of 25 to 30 years per generation, we arrive back to the first man William Kelloway - on the Kelloway pedigree as born about 1248-1253. I have no idea who conjured up this list of Kelloway ancestors for Thomas Kelloway (w. Ann Copleston), but it is what we have been given, so let us attempt to confirm it – or throw it out! This list still leaves us several generations short of these fella’s getting the Dolton grants. (v) Grigorie Stafford (2 son) Note: The copy of this pedigree from Visitations of Devon had handwritten notes all over it. Some were apparently corrections and others were additions. Unfortunately the handwriting was “poor” and the copy machine did not pick them up clearly. Therefore, I have not included these notes. They were probably written in by a previous owner of this particular book.
