Grammar Chapter 6A– Reported Speech
Reported statements/reported speech
Use past tense or the past perfect depending on the original verb.
(Present tense  Past tense) – “She isn’t there.”  He told us that she wasn’t there.
(Past tense  Past perfect) – “I bought some new clothes.”  She said that she had bought some
new clothes.
Simple Sentences – Reported speech
Subj. Said that S/he…Verb-ed
Subj. told P2 that s/he… Verb-ed
Commands/Imperatives – Reported Speech
Subj. told him/her TO do something.
Subj. told him/her NOT TO do something.
Y/N Question – Reported Speech
“Are you going to make a cake?”
You are going to make a cake.
I wonder if you are going to make a cake.
Jenny asked her mother if she was going to make a cake.
WH Questions – Reported Speech
“I am reading a book.”
What are you reading?
I wonder what you are reading.
Marty asked Jenny what she was reading.
The invisible DO verb shows up if there is no other helping verb
I didn’t prepare anything for dinner.
I DO prepared something for dinner.
