NAME OF PREPARATION:
ACETIC ACID SOLUTION 3% - 500 mL
MATERIALS NEEDED:
Glacial Acetic Acid 99.7%
(located in acid cabinet in IV Room)
Sterile Water for Irrigation
Glass Graduated Cylinder
15 mL
500 mL bottle

PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:
Vertical Flow Hood
Face Mask
Goggles or Protective Glasses
Acid-Resistant Gloves (located in acid cabinet)
Gown
DIRECTIONS:
1.
Pour 15 mL from the irrigation bottle and discard.
2.
Carefully measure 15 mL Glacial Acetic Acid in the graduate.
3.
Pour the Glacial Acetic Acid into the 485 mL of water remaining in the irrigation bottle.
Recap and rotate bottle to mix well.
4.
Affix label as shown below.

Note:
Control Number is actual date of preparation.
* A 5% solution is sometimes ordered. For a 5% solution, remove 25 mL of water and add 25
mL of Glacial Acetic Acid following the above procedures.

CLEAN-UP:
1.
Large spills of glacial acetic acid must be cleaned using the ACID SPILL KIT located
next to the acid cabinet in the IV Room. If the kit is not available, Sodium Bicarbonate
powder must be spread on the acid to buffer it before cleaning.
2.
Small spills may be buffered with Sodium Bicarbonate injection and the graduated
cylinder must be buffered with 5-10 mL of Sodium Bicarbonate solution before rinsing
with water to prevent a strong gas from forming.
3.
A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) can be found in the Employee Safety Manual
located in all pharmacy areas.
