Applied Arts (within the Family and Consumer Sciences department)
The mission of Applied Arts is to encourage students to express and explore the arts in all
aspects of their lives as well as prepare students for creative and innovative problem solving
career responsibilities. This program allows students to apply their passion for design in
three major focus areas—interior design, foods, and fashion design. Students will gain an
understanding of current and historic trends in interior, fashion, and food design.
 Interior Design - Learn about the important components of a well-designed room and
demonstrate interior design skills using the elements and principles of design. Judge effective
interior design and create a variety of interior design projects. Develop a portfolio of originally
designed interiors while exploring careers in the field of interior design.
 Fashion Design – Explore clothing and accessory design and construction; textiles;
costume history; and fashion design and construction; and career exploration.
 Foods – Explore basic food preparation, garnishing and presentation, food styling and
photography, and international trends in foods.
The Family and Consumer Sciences department at BHS believes that we are creators and consumers.
We believe that art and beauty are a part of everyday life; in the clothing we wear, the food we eat,
and the spaces we live and work in.
