My name is Joanne Rietveld. Born in South Westland a while back, I spent most of my school years in Twizel. When I was 12 my non-horsey parents finally gave in and I was introduced to a lady in the pony club who needed her horse ridden over the winter months while she worked. From this point, there was no looking back, I was horse mad! At 17 I bought my first Quarter Horse. She was an unbroken 5yo mare by Jolly Barron. She was a good looking horse, really quiet but could go like wind. I won many sprint races at the Gymkhana circuit in Central Otago each year, as well as competing in Adult riding club events of which the western riding shows were the most enjoyable.
During this time I was working in the harness racing industry and eventually gained my trainers and junior drivers licences to drive at the races. My first driving win was with a 2yo gelding that I owned, broke and trained then sold for good money to Australia. But my passion was weaning and breaking the young horses to harness. I eventually moved to Canterbury and continued to work in the harness racing scene, including stud work and sales preparation until my late twenties, when I decided to get a job in the big smoke (Christchurch) and have weekends off. I took a break from horses until Wayne & I bought our 25 acre lifestyle block, 10 minutes west of Dunsandel over 9 years ago. It didn’t take long before I had voices in my head telling me to get another
horse, not just any horse, had to be another good looking Quarter Horse! That was when I meet
Lyn Malcolm and purchased from her an imported Australian Palomino Quarter Horse mare, Miss
Obsession, who was in foal. She has been a great broodmare. To date I have taken 4 of her off spring to the Quarter Horse Nationals, 3 have won the National Yearling Futurity and the other was placed second this year. Two have won the National yearling lungeline class and 2 have won the
2yo Halter Maturity.
Two years ago I was looking for a horse that would get me into the riding side of things while my young horses were growing up. That’s when I imported Makin A Mystery, a 4 year old Appaloosa colt from Bagdad, Tasmania. He had been Australian Hi point 2yo colt in halter of his year and was lightly shown under saddle as a 3yo. Paddock name Elvis (also Doofuss), I had semen collected off him to freeze, but bred him to a chestnut daughter of Miss Obsession first and then gelded him ready to show under saddle this season. Well, Elvis has done not too bad. Highlights of this season would be winning 4 x Supreme Champions, CADRAC Hi point Horse of the show, end of season Hi point Junior Horse Buckle and Hi point Rookie Buckle. Born in November last year, Elvis now has his first progeny, Ella, a chestnut filly with white spots on her hindquarters which I am weaning at the moment with a Cremello filly By Just Inviting Jack Back out of Miss Obsession.
I look forward to the new show season. Hope to see you all out there doing your thing.
