EAC film features Nova Scotians calling for provincial leadership on coast

“The people have spoken; it’s time for a Nova Scotia Coastal Act”

Halifax - The Ecology Action Centre will hold its first public screening of the film' Voices

for our Coast' on Wednesday, May 25th, at 3:00 pm., in room 5053, Kenneth Rowe

Management Building, Dalhousie University. There will be a private screening for MLAs at

1:30 pm at Province House.

This 10 minute video features Nova Scotians from Cape Breton to Yarmouth asking for provincial leadership and action to protect Nova Scotia’s coast. “The people have spoken”, says Coastal Outreach Coordinator, Ashley Sprague, “Once our coast is gone, we’re not going to get it back. We need a Nova Scotia Coastal Act to protect people, communities, and habitat.”

The Ecology Action Centre feels that Nova Scotians are not having their voices heard on coastal issues. To remedy this, the EAC filmed over 40 people, including municipal officials, fish harvesters, real estate agents, tourism operators, coastal land owners, scientists, students, farmers to ask what they would like the province to do to protect the coast.

Jennifer Graham, Coastal Coordinator at the Ecology Action Centre says “ This video features ordinary people telling stories about their relationship with the coast. These stories are funny, touching, frustrating and ultimately hopeful.” Voices for our Coast’ sends a strong message that people expect the province to deliver swiftly and decisively on improving coastal management in Nova Scotia. The province will soon release a draft

Sustainable Coastal Development Strategy.

Donald Renouf, a clam harvester from the Eastern Shore who is featured in the film, will attend the launch to talk about how the Province can better protect coastal livelihoods.
