In honor of the Canine Heroes Wine Auction’s tenth anniversary, Oakville Ranch Vineyards has
assembled this rare collection of ten vintages of its superb Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines are classic
cabernets, typical of the Oakville Appellation—concentrated mountainous fruit layered with cassis and
raspberries and rich in deep dark cherries. The nose is prolific with hints of cedar, oiled leather, fresh
roses and candied caramel. With ten vintages to enjoy, you’ll be able to compare the nuances of the
wine as it ages. An impressive addition to any collection.

Paddle Raise for Veterinary Care
Raise your paddle to help us cover veterinary care costs for our canine heroes. Each year, GDB provides
extraordinary veterinary care for our working guides and puppies in training. Annually we incur
$3 million in veterinary care costs for our 4,200 puppies and dogs throughout the United States and
Canada. Your donation tonight will assist in covering the costs of both routine and urgent veterinary
care for our dogs and pups. Bid with wild abandon!
Five months after my third Guide Dog, Anchorage, came home I was awakened in the middle
of the night to the horrific sounds of him vomiting and the toxic smells of a runny bowel.
I knew that something was terribly wrong, so we rushed Anchorage to a critical care
veterinary clinic. He was quickly examined, and a technician came to me in the waiting room
with the news that Anchorage’s stomach was filled with fluid, and there was a chance the
stomach would flip if he didn't have immediate surgery. “Save my dog, please!” I yelled.
Six hours later, Dr. Michael Walters called to say that Anchorage had made it through the
emergency surgery and was resting well. Turns out they had dislodged pieces of a rubber Kong
dog toy from his stomach, and had to remove about ten inches of his lower intestine. He had
to spend 48 hours in the hospital, during which numerous calls and exchanges were made
with GDB's veterinary team to ensure that Anchorage’s recovery would go as smoothly as
possible in hopes that he could return to work as a guide. I appreciated all of the expert care
that was given to him, and I knew that between my local veterinarian and GDB’s vets, he was
in excellent hands. Not only did I have the moral support from the doctors, but the very
expensive surgery and subsequent medical attention were paid for in full by GDB’s Veterinary
Assistance Program in the amount of $5,000. Guide Dogs for the Blind is the only school in the
U.S. that offers this service to its alumni.
As you can see tonight, Anchorage, my fellow traveler, has been doing his job. A job he was
born to do and one that he does with tremendous heart and unconditional love. As long as
Anchorage stays healthy, we will rise to the challenge of being the best ambassadors of GDB
that we can be. Thanks to generous donations, such as those being made tonight, Anchorage
and I are still a working team, stronger than ever. Thank you!
—GDB alumna Linda Becker (tonight’s keynote speaker)

 Six bottles of 1978 Leoville-Las Cases Bordeaux Blend Dry Red Table Wine from St. Julien,
Bordeaux, France.
The Bordeaux region of France is home to some of the most prestigious wines in the world, and the
offerings here are no exception. Of the 1982 Pavie, Robert Parker writes: “The strongest Pavie in the
eighties, this dark ruby-colored 1982 reveals aromas of strawberry jam intermixed with cherries, dried
herbs, earth, and spice. Medium-bodied, with beautiful fruit flavors (91 points).” And of the 1978
Leoville-Las Cases: “This is a classic Las Cases made in a relatively austere style. Nevertheless, there are
authoritative flavors, as well as plenty of richness. Rich, medium to full-bodied, with high acidity, this
well-proportioned wine ... exhibits hefty tannin in the finish ... and gobs of fruit and character (93
points).” Both of these sophisticated wines have been aged to perfection—a must-have for any true
oenophile.
