V P CIRENCESTER LIVESTOCK MARKET REPORT TUESDAY, 4th SEPTEMBER 2007 90 REARING CALVES 10.30 am – Auctioneer: Jon Pullin Voyce Pullin Auctioneers, Valuers & Rural Surveyors 10 COWS & CALVES 11.30 am - Auctioneer: Chris Voyce 9 in-calf cows for Mr Leonard Irvine sold £520 with four over £500 to average near £460. 170 STORE CATTLE 11.30 am - Auctioneer: Chris Voyce A tremendous entry for the first post foot and mouth sale. A good crowd of keen buyers were in attendance, the majority of calves on offer whilst being a touch older than usual were of the highest quality, the majority having been running with the cows since the shut down and this enabled superb prices to be realised throughout the morning. A better than expected trade having regard to the 20 day movement controls, with almost total clearance (4 young heifers entry unsold). Cattle were brought to Cirencester from as far afield as Reading, Worcester and Goring on Thames. The top price was £580 for a Hereford x Friesian steer from Hubert Hall with Hazell & Jefferies heifers topping the heifer sale at £555. Friesians: 10 forward topping at £85 from R C Ponting & Son, best rearing types generally £30-£48. 2nd quality £14-£25. Mrs J Philips of Foxham had 32 suckled Limousin steers and heifers (Sept 06/Jan07 born) selling to £422 for steers and £345 for heifers. Hereford: Only 3 bulls on offer topped at £204 for B J & D Reeves, £176 and £154 for P J & S Bennett. Heifers topped 4 times for P Gumm at £60 per head. Their Hereford x heifers sold to £320 (April 06) and Friesian steers (June 06) to £250. Simmental: As strong a trade as experienced all year. £240 top for B Gough & Sons, B J & D Reeves sent a tremendous run of bulls off the cows selling at £212, £214, £214, £225 and £226. Their heifers also lead the way at £154 and £108. M/s B Gough & Sons heifer £138. Hazell & Jefferies, Goring on Thames sold 14 feeding heifers with Hereford x to £555 (108), Hereford x £518 (99) and Angus £458 (92). Limousins: Probably the best run of this breed seen in Cirencester. M/s R A Williams topped with a fresh bull at £252. Anton Smith consigned 3 bulls at £232, £230 and £224. Colin Davies travelled across the river to achieve 3 bulls over £200 peaking at £211. M/s D H & U Smart made £226 of their bull and a run from R C Ponting & Son reached £228 and £200. Heifers in strong demand. M/s Reeves topped at £152, Anton Smith sold a run at £111, £128, £133 and £144. 15 forward averaged £115. Belgian Blue: £234 best today for P J & S Bennett, 3 smart bulls from R J D Taylor at £180, £224 and £228. Some medium smaller bulls on offer trading at £130 - £140. Heifers topped at £160 for P J & S Bennett, £152 and £138 for R J D Taylor. Heifers averaged £147. Aberdeen Angus: Bulls topped at £162 for G Hale & Sons, £130 for P Gumm medium bulls £70-£80, heifers to £68. MRI: Two smart bulls from D H & U Smart made £88 and £60. Regular weaned calf consignors, Stevens Farms saw 3 best Hereford heifers (March 07) reach £160 per head, 3 Angus heifers of a similar age, but slightly smaller made £128 per head. Overall a superb trade was experienced at Cirencester today with all Vendors delighted with the prices achieved. Those selling to the calf groups have again been fooled into believing that prices are back as a result of foot and mouth and would be well advised to again utilise their local market and sell to the real live trade as opposed to the fixed calf group prices. Mr C Sutton, Chiseldon sold 15 Simmental x blonde steers with his Simmental x £562 (103), £478 (105) and Blonde £572 (115), £530 (114). Messrs Breakspear & Son from Reading made to £448 (112), £440 (121) for Simmental x steers and £380 and £318 (106) for Simmental x heifers. Their Hereford x heifers made £325 (88). Steers averaged £383 and heifers £342 with overall average of £365 for 170 head, a very good entry having regard to restrictions on movement and short notice for sales to commence this week.
