For many years the students of Tri-Beta, the biology honorary, organized an annual research symposium in the spring semester. As the symposium grew, faculty looked for ways to include more participants and to encourage more faculty and students to see what their colleagues and peers were doing. In the spring of 2005, the faculty Executive Committee received a petition signed by more than forty faculty members asking the faculty to set aside a day in the spring semester to recognize and honor the research and creative efforts of our students. In the fall of 2005, the faculty voted unanimously to cancel classes for one day in the spring of 2006 and to form a committee to organize such a day. After the first Liberal Arts Symposium, the faculty voted to add the day to the list of Juniata traditions. In addition to the more traditional research, the day is intended to celebrate other student works and achievements that may not necessarily fall into the “traditional” category. The Liberal Arts Symposium can be thought of as a big tent, under which one can see traditional research, artistic productions, and various kinds of problem solving and applied works. Our students do impressive work. I invite you to take the day to listen to their presentations, ask them questions, and to challenge them with your own ideas. The lead organizers for this year’s event are Dennis Johnson, Susan Pierotti, and Barb Williams. They have spent a great deal of time in preparation for one of the newest of Juniata traditions. Please join me in thanking them and the rest of the Liberal Arts Symposium Planning Committee. Title: Energy Solutions: Understanding How to Make Oxygen-Oxygen Bonds Location: Brumbaugh Academic Center, A100 SOLO Theatre Program - Performance POE’s 7:30 pm – Suzanne Von Liebig Theatre and Movement Studio SOLO is the culmination of a yearlong intensive focus in the Performance Lab class, on the creation of new work. Each of the students begin the process with fragments of ideas, movement qualities, musical inspiration, and end with a fleshed out small piece of theater. The idea is that these pieces can be expanded into full-length one person shows, which can then be taken out into the acting world as a strong self-marketing tool. The interesting and terrifying thing about this project is that each student is forced to begin with nothing but an empty space, and have to make something out of nothing, with very minimal technical support. These 20 SOLO’s are performed simultaneously starting at 7:30 pm and split between two spaces. 10 are performed in the Suzanne Von Liebig Theatre and 10 performed in the Movement Studio on the first floor. SOLO will be performed on four nights from Wednesday, April 22 – Saturday, April 25. We invite you to come for two nights to see all 20 performances in both spaces. 4 Competitive Oral Presentations The first author, presentation title, faculty sponsor, and relevant department are listed below.
