-Recruited study patients through chart screening, advertisement and sessions with inpatient psychiatry staff
and other providers.
-Explained informed consent documents to study candidates.
-Obtained vital signs, performed venipuncture, completed psychiatric rating scales and cognitive function
tests with patients according to study protocols.
-Attended principle investigator start-up and interim study meetings sponsored by the pharmaceutical

chemical manufacturing and basic physical sciences. Additional activities included:
-Counseled children in rural areas on social and family problems, education plans and career options.
-Started a creative writing club and coached volleyball
-Wrote a proposal for the construction of a science laboratory to the U.S. Embassy Self-Help Fund for U.S.
$7,400; money received.
-Participated in three workshops involving Peace Corps Volunteers, Zimbabwe teachers and administrators
to develop science resources for rural secondary schools and to incorporate environmental education into
the national syllabus.

-Carried out an individual research project evaluating the toxicity of the rivers and streams draining the Oak
Ridge Federal Reservation. This project was part of a larger assessment investigating the use of biomarkers
in evaluation water quality and environmental damage on the reservation. Responsibilities were as follows:
-Engaged in extensive field work to select testing sites and collect water samples.
-Conducted biotoxicity assays with fish embryos to evaluate water quality.
-Completed a research paper and 30-minute seminar on the results of the project in fulfillment of
requirements for the Research Participation Semester through the Department of Energy.
