Applications are invited from dynamic and enthusiastic individuals for this exciting post as
Consultant Psychiatrist in Psychotherapy at Stobhill Hospital.
The post-holder will be the lead Consultant for the Stobhill Psychotherapy Department and
will work with other members of the clinic team to provide the psychodynamic
psychotherapy service for North Glasgow. The team includes two part-time adult
psychotherapists (one psychoanalytic psychotherapist, one group analyst) and a nurse
therapist. The service offers direct work with patients, consultation to colleagues and
teaching and training of NorthEast Mental Health Directorate staff.
The post is linked to active teaching programmes. Continuing professional development,
audit and research are encouraged and supported.
The post is offered on a part-time basis (8 sessions).
Applicants must have full GMC registration, a licence to practise and be eligible for
inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of
higher specialist training leading to a CCT in Psychotherapy or eligibility for specialist
registration (CESR) or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview.
Applicants must have MRCPsych or equivalent Non-UK applicants must demonstrate
equivalent training.
Job Description
Consultant Psychiatrist in Psychotherapy - Stobhill Psychotherapy
Department
The Post holder will be the lead Consultant for the Stobhill Psychotherapy
Department and will work with other members of the clinic team to provide the
psychodynamic psychotherapy service for North Glasgow.
1. Current Psychiatric Services – North East Glasgow
The psychiatric services in Glasgow are split into three areas; two Areas
North of the River Clyde and one Area to the South. The Northeast area has
established as a single directorate. The Northeast Glasgow Sector lies
between the River Clyde to the South, Possil Park in the west and
Easterhouse to the East and the Campsie Hills to the North. It covers a
population of approximately 350,000 with areas of significant deprivation.
General adult services in NorthEast Glasgow are provided by 4 community
resource centres: Springpark Centre (Springburn/Possill), Arran Centre (City
Centre Locality), Auchinlea (East Sector) and Kirkintilloch CMHT (Strathkelvin
Locality).
The Stobhill Psychotherapy Department provides a service for patients in
North Glasgow. Carswell House provides a psychotherapy service for patients
in East Glasgow.
In addition to the Psychotherapy and Psychology departments, also on the
Stobhill Hospital site is MacKinnon House (general adult inpatient unit and
IPCU), 2 rehab wards, 2 older adults wards, Eriskay House (addictions unit),
Skye House (regional adolescent unit) and Rowanbank (regional medium
secure unit). Ultimately it is planned that in patient services for East Glasgow
will be moved from Parkhead to the Stobhill site also.

There are approximately 11 junior trainees (including foundation year and GP
trainees) on the North Glasgow Training Scheme.
2. Overview
This post is based in Stobhill Hospital where in-patient beds for the sector are
located. The theoretical model of practice is psychodynamic.
The consultant works as a core member of the multidisciplinary team
providing psychodynamic assessment and consultation, treatment, and
supervision. Other aspects of the role include teaching and providing
supervision and training of psychiatrists and other health professionals.
Applicants must have full GMC registration, a licence to practice and be
eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK
should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to a CCT in
Psychotherapy or joint CCT in General Adult Psychiatry with Psychotherapy
or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. Non-UK
applicants must demonstrate equivalent training. It is desirable that a
successful applicant would be an approved medical practitioner in terms of
the Mental Health (Scotland) Act 2003. It is also desirable that the successful
applicant has membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
The post holder will also cover colleagues in line with the arrangements set
out in the National Terms and Conditions.
The post holder will be supported by input from fellow consultants for patients
whom they may share, and will be expected to liaise with staff for patients with
whom the care is shared.
3. Psychotherapy Services
There are 6 Psychotherapy services in GG&C: North Glasgow (Stobhill
Hospital), East Glasgow (Carswell House), South Glasgow (Leverndale
Hospital), Paisley (Dykebar Hospital), West Glasgow (Landsdowne),
Helensburgh/Dumbarton (Riverview Resource Centre), and there is a City
Wide Homeless and Personality Disorder Team based in Carswell House.
The emerging direction of Psychotherapy services in GG&C may be of a
networked service rather than a strictly sector based service. The Consultants
from these services meet regularly in the Division of Psychotherapy. There is
a wider group of clinical peer support in the West of Scotland Psychotherapy
Workshop where clinical work is presented and discussed.
There are many opportunities to develop in this post. The service accepts
referrals from General Practice, Primary and Community Mental Health
Teams in the area. There are regular clinical requests for assessment and
consultation. There are well developed Community Mental Health Teams who
may request consultation work to help working with particular patients.
Consultation may also be occasionally requested for in-patients.

This job plan is negotiable and will be agreed between the successful applicant and
the Clinical Director. NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde initially allocates all full time
consultants 10 PAs made up of 9 PAs in Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and one core
Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) for CPD, audit, clinical governance,
appraisal, revalidation, job planning, internal routine communication and
management meetings. The precise allocation of SPA time and associate objectives
will be agreed with the successful applicant and will be reviewed at annual job
planning.
5. Duties of the Post
The post holder will be expected to provide additional medical leadership to
the team and assist with further developments of the service. There is
excellent support from a skilled, motivated multi-disciplinary team, medical
colleagues and management.
Flexibility of the post holder is necessary to provide psychotherapy services
and the post holder may be required to provide urgent advice to team
members.
The main duties are
Clinical
Allocation and psychodynamic assessment of patients referred to the service
Treatment planning and review.
Providing treatment of patients in appropriate modality, frequency and
duration.
Providing clinical supervision to psychotherapy team members.
Providing psychodynamic opinion, advice or consultation to colleagues on
request.
Education
The Royal College of Psychiatrists have mandatory guidelines for the training
of psychiatrists which include psychotherapy experience in Core and Higher
training. The post holder will be expected to contribute to the training and
supervision of medical colleagues. The post holder will be expected to
contribute to providing clinical and/or educational supervision psychotherapy
educational placement for Core Trainees, usually allocated one per six
months and in time Specialist Psychotherapy Trainees. Case Discussion /
Balint Group is also mandatory for the Core Trainees and may share this task
with the psychotherapy colleague or a colleague in general adult psychiatry.
Core Psychiatry trainees are required to undertake psychotherapy treatment
of a patient under supervision and to gain competencies in the
psychodynamic understanding of relationships. Supervision can be provided
in groups or to individuals depending on the needs of the supervisor and
trainees.
Advanced Trainees in general adult psychiatry may also request further
experience in psychodynamic psychotherapy. This is usually by individual
request and agreed with their Training Programme Director.
The post holder may also take part in teaching and training provided by the
West of, Scotland Deanery. The Committee in Psychiatry have a sub group
for psychotherapy who are responsible for organising and providing
psychotherapy training experiences. The MRCPsych Course, organised by
the Deanery is presently held in Erskine Hospital. There are lectures on
psychodynamic psychotherapy in the course. The post holder will be invited
onto the psychotherapy sub-committee and may become involved in the
provision of specialist lectures and teaching.
The post holder may also be asked to contribute to the teaching of medical
students on placement.
On Call
The post holder may choose to participate in the North Glasgow on call rota,
on a pro rata basis. The post holder, if not already approved by GG&C Board
under section 22 of the Mental health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act,
will have to undergo approved training.
Managerial
The post holder will be expected to have clinical leadership of the team and
support development of mental health and psychotherapy services. They will
be required to ensure proper and safe care of their patients. They will be
expected to take part in clinical audit and assist management in development
of services including the organisation and functioning of their team.
As part of the psychiatry advisory structure the post holder will become a
member of the NorthEast Glasgow Division of Psychiatry and be invited, in
time to take on roles associated with the development and management of
psychiatry in the wider mental health systems. The post holder may be invited
from time to time to management meetings to provide a psychodynamic view
to a particular problem or development.
Continued Professional Development
The post holder will be expected to remain in good standing for CPD. There
are numerous opportunities provided. Training requirements will be in
agreement with the Clinical Director and be supported via job planning and
clinical appraisal. Funding may be available to support this.
