Dear Fellow Applicant: Thank you for your inquiry about the MUSC Fellowship in Clinical Neurophysiology. The program offer one year of study, incorporating electroencephalography and epilepsy, electromyography and neuromuscular diseases, evoked potentials and intraoperative monitoring. At the conclusion of one year of training, fellows are qualified to sit for examination by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology for Special Qualification in Clinical Neurophysiology. With additional focus on EMG or on EEG, fellows may also meet requirements to sit for examination by the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine or the American Board of Clinical Neurophysiology. Faculty and staff in the program includes neuromuscular specialists, pediatric epileptologists and adult epileptologists, in addition to a neuropsychologist, and neurosurgeons who specializes in functional neurosurgery, adult and pediatric epilepsy coordinators, and nursing staff. Current faculty/staff include the following: Jonathan Edwards, Director, Comprehensive Epilepsy Robert Turner, M.D., Director, Pediatric Epilepsy Program Jonathan Halford, M.D., Adult epileptologist Mark T. Wagner, Ph.D., Neuropsychologist Steven Glazier, M.D. Division Chief of Neurosurgy (Epilepsy Surgery) Gabriel Martz, M.D., Adult Epilepsy David Stickler, M.D., Director of Neuromuscular Services Ken Nozaki, M.D., Neuromuscular Jerome Kurent, M.D., MPH, Neuromuscular Steve Takacs, M.D., Neurosurgeon (functional neurosurgery) Paul B. Pritchard, III, M.D., Adult Epileptologist Samir Karia, MBBS, Pediatric Epilepsy Mrs. Olivia N. Burch, Coordinator, Residency and Fellowship Programs Clinical activities of the combined programs include adult and pediatric epilepsy clinics, vagus nerve stimulator (VNS) clinics, video-EEG (VEEG) monitoring (inpatient and outpatient), and outreach clinics. We offer all treatment modalities, including pharmacological treatment, vagus nerve stimulators, and surgical treatment. We are fortunate to have superb interventional neuroradiology and an outstanding program and research in functional MRI. The exposure to peripheral neurophysiology involves the performance and interpretation of electrodiagnostic studies performed in the MUSC EMG laboratory including specialized testing of neuromuscular junction physiology. Additional clinical activities include expose to patients in the neuromuscular specialty clinics (Myasthenia Gravis Clinic, MDA Clinic, MUSC ALS Clinic). The current fellowship is a one-year term, but it is possible to extend that time to two years through participation in research projects. Applicants are asked to designate a preference for either the EEG or EMG track. Positions for the Fellowship are available beginning July 1. Interested applicants are requested to complete the enclosed application and return it to us along with two letters of recommendations, one of which should be from your Neurology program director, as well as an official transcript. International medical graduates should also submit a copy of their USMLE scores. Please submit all papers without paper clips or staples. Candidates whose credentials and interests qualify them for further consideration will be invited to interview with our faculty and staff. Typically such visits are scheduled between October and December. If you have further questions after you have submitted your application, please feel free to contact Olivia N. Burch via E-mail (burchon@musc.edu). Thank you again for your interest in our program. Sincerely, David E.
