Natural Health Solution April 17, 2007 Finally spring has sprung! April showers bring May, flowers and for many individuals flowers, pollen and grass, not to mention dust, mold and pets bring allergies. While most people like flowers nobody likes allergies. This is why I choose to talk about allergies and respiratory problem this month. What’s an Allergy? Allergies are exaggerated reactions of the immune system to substances that don’t’ cause symptoms in most people. Those reactions can come in the form of: Skin rashes, runny and stuffy noses, itchy eyes, upset stomach or intestines (from food allergies), coughing, shortness of breath, wheezing, or any distress to the respiratory system (this could come from any kind of allergen). More than one-third of Canadians have allergies, but most don’t have their symptoms under control. Allergies that affect your lungs can be life threatening. This is called anaphylactic reaction. If you’re allergic to a wasp sting for instance, your blood vessels develop holes that leak fluid (you need blood inside the vessels, not outside) and you may get so short of breath that no air can move (the fluid constricts the bronchi so much, no air can pass, and you cannot even hear your wheezing). And you’d need immediate help to open airways. Chronic inflammation starts and can developed in serious respiratory problem. By avoiding chronic inflammation you avoid the aging of lung tissue associated with the inflammation as well. The zone inflammation diet is very recommended to address this problem and all inflammation problems. Step 1. Avoid toxic substances such as carbon monoxide (ex: driving in traffic) indoor pollutants like radon, asbestos, and mold. Test for radon before buying a house, for instance. Keep your windows closed when on the freeways in large cities to avoid monoxide. Avoiding pollution decrease arterial hardening and decreases all diseases related to arterial aging. Like infections of the lung, asthma, heart disease, stroke, and memory loss. Step 2. Learn proper breathing, yoga class is excellent to show you how to breathe Step 3. Take the test. Briskly run up two flights of stairs or briskly walk six blocks. If you can do either of those without pausing to rest, your lungs are probably in pretty good shape. Step 4. Go to the nursery. Quite simply, plants improve air quality because they produce oxygen, increase the oxygen in the rooms of your house with plants and remove pollutants. Step5. Shake your butt. Smoke may be great for grilling but create damage to your lungs, and puts you at risk for lung diseases like cancer, emphysema, and bronchitis. Stop smoking. Step 6. Take supplements Magnesium is a mineral that relaxes the bronchial tubes and can help with asthma. Take at least 400 milligrams a day. Nature’s Sunshine magnesium is # 1786-6. If you routinely cough up mucus from your lungs take LHC#1890-3 to loosen mucus. If you have sinus problems take SNX # 1247-8. If you are allergic to an environmental substance for relieve take ALJ #778-8 or Histablock #776-1. Most important of all if you have allergy you need to reinforce your immune system. Nature’s Sunshine has many products that can help you. I hope this will help you and the people you know to fully enjoy spring and summer season.
