ASCP RESIDENT COUNCIL
RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
Overview
The ASCP Resident Council and its network of Resident Representatives are the voice of
membership. This mandates that they be actively involved in representing the ASCP and
relaying its activities and accomplishments to the grassroots members. Resident
Representatives bring issues and concerns from the membership to the Council.
Primary Functions:
1. Serve as an ASCP representative in your residency program.
2. Promote ASCP membership and the pathology profession.
3. Communicate effectively between the ASCP Resident Council and your fellow
residents in your residency program.
Roles and Responsibilities:
1. Serve as a communication link between the ASCP Resident Council and residents
in your program, thereby serving as a contact or resource person for ASCP.
2. Participate in ASCP activities through direct involvement, or by identifying and
recruiting other qualified/interested residents and pathologists for ASCP projects.
3. Conduct presentations on ASCP each year to residents in your program which
outlines the goals, activities, and advantages of ASCP membership at the
beginning of each academic year. (Use of the Resident Representative PowerPoint
presentation is suggested).
4. Serve as a mentor to residents, pathology students and those interested in the
profession.
5. Recommend and/or nominate residents for awards, committee appointments, and
the Resident Council.
6. Encourage the submission of abstracts for the AJCP Resident Research
Symposium.
7. Use social media to promote ASCP. Post on Facebook and send Twitter Tweets
regarding education courses you may have attended, something interesting you
saw on the ASCP website, or even a picture of you at your work.
8. Submit one short written report annually describing the year’s activities. (A $25
ASCP book certificate will be sent after receiving the report.)
Qualifications:
1. ASCP Resident member in good standing and willing to commit to the roles and
responsibilities of being a Resident Representative.
Term:
The term of office for each Resident Representative is one year. A Resident
Representative may serve an unlimited number of terms or until graduation from their
residency program and is appointed by the Resident Council. Recommendations for
Resident Representatives are made by Residency Program Directors/Coordinators and
others who have knowledge of qualified candidates. Residents are also able to selfnominate for this position.
Evaluation:
After one year, the ASCP Staff Liaison to the Resident Council will evaluate Resident
Representative participation in activities and recommend reappointment to the Council
Chair.
