It is an emerging scientific field that deals with biomedical data, information and knowledge - their storage, retrieval, and optimal use for problem solving and decision making. It touches on all basic and applied fields in biomedicine and is closely tied to modern healthcare communication and information technologies, such as Electronic Health Records (EHR). EHRs are fast becoming ubiquitous in the clinical settings. These systems offer the greatest potential for practice-based learning and improvement as well as research. In this elective, the student will be exposed to the concepts and application of health informatics as it relates to improving the quality of care. The first week will involve a tour of the institutions's health informatics infrastructure (i.e., clinical information systems, clinical decision support, electronic health records, etc) and organizational structures that impact quality; didactics on health informatics and quality improvement; and real-world exposure to health informatics and quality improvement activities. The second week will involve a self-directed study on real clinical issues and its potential for process improvement. The major emphasis of this elective is to increase the student's awareness to a systems-based approach to improving quality of healthcare. The student will be evaluated by the attendance, level of participation as well as on a 1-2 page deliverable at the end of the rotation, describing a real-world clinical issue that is appropriate for quality improvement. At the end of the rotation, the student will have gained practical knowledge and exposure to health informatics and how it relates to improving the care delivery process.
