CP Lighting has New Ways to Shed Light on the LED
Christopher Poehlmann has been thinking through the conundrum of the LED for quite awhile. The main problem with the little diode in his estimation is that it is still basically a tiny spotlight. Manufacturers are working at ways to make the diodes more user friendly and are getting better and better at looking and working like the standard light bulb we are all so familiar with. Poehlmann’s quest to incorporate the LED in the fixtures he designs for his company CP Lighting has guided him to a some rather interesting outcomes.
For his 2015 reinventing of his now famous newGROWTH organic modern chandeliers, CP Lighting will debut the newGROWTH2 LED line. A minimalist interpretation of his iconic tree branch inspired fixtures now with LED driven glowing branch ends. The LED modules are housed in the aluminum branch ends, which also act as heat sinks, with the LED spotlight shining into frosted acrylic cylinders. These lenses exploit the fabulous fiberoptic property of acrylic, absorbing and gathering the light and thus glowing like a frosted light bulb yet designed to be a seamless extension of the 1.25” diameter branch itself.
The GlowStick Pendant series, which will also debut at the show is a direct extension of the newGROWTH2
LED solution. With these new pendants, Poehlmann has created a dainty little fixture certain to have wide ranging appeal in its simplicity of form and practical beauty. The line starts with the basic frosted cylinder as a highly functional ambient pendant, equalling the approximate output of a frosted 60W incandescent bulb. From there, options with clear and frosted acrylic coupled with crystals give the line a bit of glam with a very refined style, not over the top crystal chandelier glitz, just great minimal design with the crystals playing off the downlight of the
LED.
This brings us to the last, but possibly most important innovation in the new work from CP Lighting -- the CP3d series. Poehlmann has conceived this ongoing series of 3d printed nylon shades as light gathering and shadow play devices, not mere decorative lamp shades. The printed balls of swirling leaves catch the light of the LED spot and glow like a lightbulb while at the same time allowing light and shadow to pass through the openings creating interesting shadow and light play like bright sunlight shining through a forest canopy. Nothing ordinary here, just a stunning use of new technology to create mood and meaning.
