carbon dioxide than petroleum, thus relieving the effects of global warming
2. PREVENTING ASTHMA: Recycled cooking oil biodiesel emits 47% fewer asthmainducing particulates than petroleum biodiesel
3. REDUCING DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL: Recycled cooking oil is a local
alternative to petroleum diesel fuel. It can be used in any diesel engine without
modification, reducing NYC’s dependency on foreign sources of energy
4. REDUCING WASTE: Locally recycling cooking oil reduces NYC waste stream
5. GREEN JOBS CREATION: RWA creates and trains for local green jobs for formerly
homeless New Yorkers through the DOE Fund.
6. SAVING OUR WATERWAYS & INFRASTRUCTURE: By providing an alternative
disposal method for used cooking oil & saves tax payers money by reducing clogs in the
City’s sewer system
7. SUPPORT ALTERNATIVE ENERGY CHOICES: 100% of RWA's collections are used to
make second-generation biodiesel for cleaner-running NYC truck fleets and home heating
systems.
8. REDUCE RODENTS & BAD SMELLS: Stopping cooking oil from going down NYC’s
drains and providing proper collection containers helps reduce bad smells and rodents
9. SUPPORT STUDENT SUSTAINABILITY TRAINING: The Go Green Cooking Oil
Recycling Program partners with local community groups and schools to provide
sustainability and outreach education

Office of Manhattan Borough President’s Scott M. Stringer
In 2007 Manhattan Borough President Scott M. Stinger launched the Go Green Initiative in
Manhattan. The purpose of the Go Green Initiative is to help reverse decades of environmental
injustice and degradation by bringing leaders and Manhattan residents together to develop a
plan and an agenda for greening neighborhoods where environmental disparities have been
most acute. The Go Green Initiative is currently in East Harlem, Washington Heights, Inwood,
and the Lower East Side and focuses on: Public Health & Asthma, Farmers Markets & Healthy
Foods, Green Building, Parks & Open Space, Transportation, and Sustainable Business.
The Lower East Side Ecology Center (LESEC) is an environmental not-for-profit, working
since 1987 towards a more sustainable NYC. EcoBizNYC, a new program of the Lower East
Side Ecology Center, provides small businesses with resources on how to reduce their overall
emissions, negative impacts on community health, and increase their community support, while
saving money and increasing their community involvement.
RWA Resource Recovery provides free, on-demand, efficient pickups of waste cooking oil to
food service establishments in New York City. RWA Resource Recovery is fully insured and
compliant with all NYC waste disposal regulations.
