ISU 2003 Summer Session
NOTES FOR CANADIAN APPLICANTS
Please read these instructions carefully. They
apply specifically to Canadian candidates.
Applicants must apply on-line at the International
Space University (ISU) website:

1. CFISU - AUCC
The Canadian Foundation for the International
Space University (CFISU) is a private, non-profit
charitable organization, which promotes the ISU
Program in Canada. The Board of Directors of
CFISU is comprised of leading individuals from
Canadian industry and universities.
CFISU receives support from many Canadian
companies, government departments and
agencies. Depending on resources, CFISU typically
sponsors over 10 Canadians each year.
The Scholarships and Training Division of the
Association of Universities and Colleges of
Canada (AUCC) has been engaged by the CFISU
to advertise the ISU 2003 Summer Session
Program Competition in Canada.
2. ISU 2003 SUMMER SESSION PROGRAM (SSP)
The official host institution for the ISU 2003 SSP
will be the Pole Universitaire Europeen de
Strasbourg, in Strasbourg, France. The SSP will
be held from July 5 to September 6, 2003.
Applicants wishing to receive course credits in
their own graduate program for completing ISU
programs must petition their own university.
4. LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY
Candidates should be conversant in English and in
a second language, preferably French. As part of
the. application process,~candidates must submit
the "Proof of Second Language Competence"
form, signed by a professional, with their
application. In exceptional circumstances this
requirement will be waived with evidence of
active participation in multicultural or multinational
activities.
5. TERMS OF THE AWARD
CFISU pays all tuition, travel, and room and board
on campus (approximately $20,000 in 2003) for
those selected. Students are responsible for their
own out-of-pocket expenses while studying at
ISU.
CFISU reserves the right to decline sponsorship
and withdraw funding in its sole discretion.
Candidates selected by CFISU are usually given
advanced acceptance by ISU.
6. SELECTION CRITERIA
Scholarship winners are selected in a national
competition on the basis of excellence. The
selection of scholarship semi-finalists is made by a
panel chosen from industry and universities. The
Review Committee will base its recommendations
on the following points:
• Academic results
Letters of reference and proficiency
• Essays
• Candidate's space-related activities
7. TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS
3. ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must be Canadian citizens. The
competition is open to graduate students and
graduate degree holders from all disciplines.
Students in law, journalism, architecture, social
science and humanities disciplines are particularly
welcome to apply. Students in their fourth year
of an undergraduate program may apply if they
have been admitted to a Masters degree program
for September 2003.
CFISU will make all travel arrangements for
scholarship winners. Winners will be expected to
attend a briefing session, dinner and reception
prior to their travel to France. On their return from
the SSP, students will be expected to report to
their sponsor. Participants will also be expected
to participate in alumnae events upon their return.
8. APPLICATION FEE
A processing fee of $25.00 CDN is required.
Please make your cheque or money order payable
to "CFISU" and attach it to your application form.
9. TRANSCRIPTS
Canadian applicants must arrange to have official
transcripts sent directly by the universities to the
AUCC at the address indicated in Section 1 1
below. The deadline to receive transcripts at the
AUCC is January 31", 2003 by 4pm, EST.
10. REFERENCE LETTERS
Applicants should obtain two reference letters and
proof of language proficiency from professionals.
Evaluators should return the Letter of Evaluation
Form, duly signed and dated, to the applicants in
sealed envelopes. Applicants must submit the
sealed envelopes and proof yof language
proficiency to AUCC. (See Section 1 1)
11. APPLICATIONS
Please follow this procedure exactly.
The deadline for competing the on-line application
and essay and receipt by AUCC of the reference
letters (in sealed envelopes), language
competency assessment and transcripts is
January 31, 2003 by 4pm EST. All applications
must be received on or before this date and

For an application to be considered complete, it
must include:
• application form and essay completed on-line
(ISU will provide to AUCC)
• transcripts (directly from your university)
• two (sealed) letters of evaluation
• evaluation of language proficiency
• application fee of $25, payable to CFISU.

13. IMPORTANT DATES
January 31, 2003: Deadline for AUCC to have
received completed applications, including
transcripts
February 28, 2003: CFISU Selection Committee
Meeting
March 2003: CFISU forwards list of semi-finalists
to ISU. AUCC notifies unsuccessful candidates.
March 2003: ISU makes final selection of
applicants. CF!SU informs scholarship winners.
Only complete applications, including transcripts,
will be acknowledged. Incomplete applications
will not be submitted to the Review Committee.
Note: Candidates who applied for this scholarship
in previous years must submit a complete new
application. Documents provided with an earlier
application cannot be transferred to this year's
competition.
July 2003: CFISU scholarship winners attend an
orientation session, dinner and reception.
July 5 to September 6, 2003: Summer Session
