Autumn Newsletter – 2013
Bull Sales
I am going to start this newsletter with an apology for
the delay in getting this out to you all. I’ve been a
very busy bee recently and have just found a spare
hour to write this, my apologies again if it’s a bit
shorter than usual. I’ll try and pack in as much as I can.
Our herd trip had to be cancelled this year, due to
issues that made it difficult for all wanting to attend.
However, I think the fact that the summer has been
kind to us, we can accept the mishap.
Hereford Market Society Sales
The only dampener this year was the news from
Council that the Hereford Sales are being changed
from Saturday’s to Tuesday’s. The NEHBA have
formed a petition, which has been signed online and
via paper form. The last Council meeting saw the
motion carried forward but it was by no means a
majority vote! Everyone I have talked with around
the Country is up in arms and some even haven’t been
consulted by their Council representatives. It would
seem that some are not “representing”. That being
that, Council have decided to assess after the April
sale, which will be a Tuesday! Watch this space.......
Sad News
Unfortunately this year has lost a few breeders up and
down the Country.
Our closest member was Mrs Ellen Marritt. Some of
you will have known her, she was 99 when she passed
away, her family were already planning her 100th
Birthday party. Mrs Marritt was a life and founder
member of the NEHBA. We offer our condolences to
her family.
On a more positive note, bull sales have been
phenomenal this year, with many breeders selling up
and calls still coming. What a fantastic proclamation
for the breed.
Websales
We do have the facility to advertise on our website or
even through our Facebook page. It would be good if
members could give feedback as to whether their
buyers are coming from the adverts via these media
types.
Photos
In this year’s journal I have been asking members for
photos from their personal endeavours with cattle. I
had a great response so thanks to all that sent them
in. On an ongoing basis, if anyone has any photos that
they think would be good for the website or facebook,
then please send them over (jackie@jcrecycling.co.uk)
Agribition
This year one of our young members was accepted as
a delegate on the Agribition tour in Canada. Nicola
Walker, from Northallerton, is set to travel out soon.
We wish Nicola all the best and hope she enjoys her
trip; socially and practically. I’m sure Nicola will fill us
in when she returns.
National Suckler Competition
2014 will see the next Pedigree Suckler Herd
Competition. We have two categories; small (10 cows
and under) and large (11 cows and over). This is
usually judged during an opening between shows, late

farm, location, weather, type of land, housing,
systems, cattle quality, calving patterns etc. Within

this we award 1st-3rd in each category and the judge
has recently passed away. Should anyone wish to
will pick an overall winner. The overall winner will go
attend the funeral it will be on Monday 25th
forward to compete in the National comp, which is
November 2013, at Christ Church, Old Town, Swindon,
usually judged in September. The winning herd from
Wiltshire. The Service will start at 12 noon.

ofAugust. There is also the chance to win best
heifer/bull calf born that year and best stock bull. I
am giving you enough warning so that you don’t have
any excuses! Entries are usually around £15 per herd,
which covers trophy costs. I will no doubt be sending
out application forms with the Spring Newsletter. We
will need a judge for this and will appoint one at the
AGM in February.
Her Champion calves went to the Ayre family and
Dendor family.
AGM February
The National Calf show has been accepted at Carlisle
for 2014, at the Agri Expo event. The Scottish
Hereford Breeders Secretary, now PaulineWasson of
Baldinnie Herefords, has approached me and asked if
we would possibly join them in hosting the event.
Please give this some thought as we will be receiving
an official request ahead of the AGM in order for us to
discuss it.
Our AGM will take place in February 2014. Mindful of
the fact we have quite a few new members, we cover
a multitude of topics and if you want to attend and
haven’t done before you are very welcome to come.
Non-members are welcome but obviously cannot
vote. The venue is yet to be confirmed, but I will have
this organised prior to the date and will be in touch
obviously in advance.
Council Representatives
2014 will see the year for voting in our
representatives for Council. The usual criteria is
obviously that you are a full member of the HCS and
that you register 10 calves or more per year.
Voting papers will be sent for the NEHBA nominees
giving members of the HCS (within the NEHBA) an
opportunity to vote.
The National Calf Show this year is being held at
Shrewsbury Market on Saturday 7th December. This is
an enjoyable day but can be extremely cold, and if this
winter is going to be as cold as they say, then put your
thermals on and wear some insulated boots.
Results and Presentation Day
Well done to all the show exhibitors in the 2013 show
season. Our young handlers are still proving to be
successful around the circuit and well done to them
all.

Beef Expo 2014 – Hexham
Beef expo will be held at Hexham Auction next year.
As it is situated in our area, the HCS have asked us to
locate and provide cattle for the stand. There have
already been some offers of cattle from members of
our area and I thank them on behalf of the NEHBA for
this. Should anyone have any suggestions for the
event then please do broach them. It will inevitably
be an agenda item for the AGM.

Rebecca, Hollie and Lucy Culpan
Davie and Kate Dickinson
Thank you to all the committee members and
wider members that have given their input over
the year (by whichever means) it is brilliant to
have such supportive breeders amongst us, the
Association would struggle without you.

Plea for contact details
All the winners and newcomers will be presented
at the “Presentation Day” at Bernard and Barbara
Rimmer’s Farm, Holmefields Farm, Off Long Lane,
Scorton, Preston, PR3 1DB. Tel: 01524 792 748 or
07714254564. The date is set for Sunday 24th
November at 12.30 for a light lunch. Then
followed by a walk round the farm, we will
continue on to a local hotel for a Sunday beef
roast, and presentation of awards.
I ask for these every newsletter and slowly I do
seem to be adding a few to the email circulars
every time! I would greatly appreciate it if
anyone has access to the internet or an email
account, that they forward their email addresses
onto me. The cost of postage is increasing and in
some instances very unreliable, I do send out lots
of regular updates to members and those on my
postal register are missing a huge amount of
information. Email has many advantages which I
won’t bore you with, but I always wonder how I
ever managed without it!
Please let me know, no later than Wednesday
20th November if you wish to attend. Either by
letter, email, fax, text, facebook, phone (my
contact details are at the end of the newsletter.
If you require directions then please let me know
and I’ll send some over. For those that have
already let me know you don’t need to reply
again!
