Exhibitions Internship 2015
Background and Further Information
Camden Arts Centre is distinguished by its integrated approach to exhibitions and
education which produces a forward-looking and risk-taking programme, nurturing
emerging talent and providing an entry point for new audiences. This distinction has been
formed through regular introduction of unknown artists from abroad, promotion of younger
artists and the reassessment of the work of older generation artists. The emphasis on the
artistic process and practice is unique to the organisation.
The international scope and flavour of the programme encourages visits from people
based all over London and the UK and is a destination of choice for international visitors
and students. In addition, Camden Arts Centre’s programme and activities are designed
to appeal to residents of North London and Greater London, allowing especially those
living nearby to experience and participate in high quality arts activities on their doorstep.
The building redevelopment programme completed in December 2003 (with the building
re-opening to the public in January 2004) improved our facilities and enabled Camden
Arts Centre to accommodate greater numbers at talks, events, courses, practical activities
and drop-in sessions as well. It also improved our gallery and studio spaces, bringing
them up-to-date and fully inline with accessibility guidelines. The improved facilities are
also helping the organisation to increase visitor numbers and our financial stability by
improving the areas of Camden Arts Centre dedicated to a more commercial undertaking
i.e. the Café and Bookshop.
Mission Statement
Camden Arts Centre is a venue for contemporary visual art and education. Placing the
artist at the core of the programme, Camden Arts Centre strives to involve members of the
public in the ideas and processes of today’s artists, and the artists who inspire them.
The exhibition and education programmes are developed with equal importance and are
continually intertwined. The year-round programme includes exhibitions, artist residencies,
talks and events, school and artists’ projects, courses and off-site activities, ensuring
Camden Arts Centre remains a dynamic place for seeing, making and talking about art.
Exhibitions feature emerging artists, international artists showing for the first time in
London, significant historic figures who have inspired contemporary practice, and artist
selected group shows relevant to current debate.
Residencies develop artists’ practices with practical support, resulting in new work and
public participation.
Projects are initiatives to encourage people of all ages, abilities and areas of interest to
engage with contemporary art.
Events engage audiences in a regular series of talks and discussions, film screenings and
live art performances.
Courses teach creative and technical skills to people of all ages and abilities, in a range of
specialist mediums.
