Stephen R. Permut, M.D.,J.D. Stephen R. Permut, M.D.,J.D. is Professor and Chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Temple University School of Medicine and is also the Associate Dean for Academic Affiliations. Dr. Permut is a graduate of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania and the Temple University School of Medicine. He did his postgraduate training in internal medicine at the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis. He then started a solo, private practice in general medicine in the inner city of Wilmington, Delaware. Subsequently, he attended Law School at Widener University. Dr. Permut is board certified in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, and Legal Medicine. Dr. Permut’s other professional experiences include having founded the Family Medicine Residency Program at St. Francis Hospital, in Wilmington, Delaware, where he later served as Vice President for Medical Affairs. He has also served as Medical Director for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Delaware and one of its managed care plans. Some of his positions in organized medicine include: founding Chair, Public Affairs Committee, New Castle Medical Society; founding Chair, Legislative Action Committee, Medical Society of Delaware (MSD); MSD, President; Chair, AMA, Council on Legislation; Chair, Southeastern Delegation, AMA; member, AMA Board Task Force on Patient Safety; and currently Chair, Delaware Delegation to the AMA House of Delegates. Dr. Permut is currently running for the Board of Trustees of the AMA. Dr. Permut is married to Marylene Quiambao Permut and has two daughters, Irene Permut, M.D. and Laura Sparks, who is married to Andrew Sparks. Laura and Andrew have Two children, Casey and Haoshun Sparks.
