Other Information
Course description
An examination of the processes and principles that control the accumulation and
lithification of sediments, based on examples of recent environments and ancient rock
sections in many parts of the world. Laboratory emphasizes map-reading skills and methods
for studying recent and ancient sediments and rocks. Three field trips.
Course objectives
1. To gain an understanding by example and laboratory exercises of how sedimentary rocks
form and are classified.
2. To gain an understanding of the various types of sedimentary rocks and how they can be
used for the interpretation of earth history.
3. To gain an understanding of the various textures, structures, and sequences of sedimentary
rocks and be able to use them to interpret ancient depositional environments,
paleogeographies, and climates.
4. To gain an understanding of the economic importance and uses for sedimentary rocks and
deposits.
5. To gain an understanding of the relationship of sedimentary deposits to regional and global
tectonic events.
6. To able to use a variety of laboratory and field techniques to study sedimentary rocks.
7. To gain an understanding of the principles of physical stratigraphic analysis and the
relationship of sedimentary formations to elements of metamorphic, igneous, and structural
geology.
Attendance, behavior, and integrity
You are expected to attend all lectures and are required to attend (or make-up) all labs. You
are expected to be on-time for class and be dressed appropriately. You are expected to behave in an
adult, civil, and non-disruptive manner (cell phones should be shut-off when in academic buildings).
Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated.
Disability Accommodations
If you have a disability and may require accommodations or modifications in class
instruction or course-related activities, please contact the Learning Support Center (LSC) staff who
can arrange for reasonable accommodations for students who provide documentation of their
disability/condition. If you are presently registered with the LSC and have requested
accommodations through the LSC for this semester, please plan to meet with me as early as possible
to discuss the best way to implement these accommodations in this class.
