An important key to the success of children in an immersion program is a positive working relationship between the school
and the home. Humble ISD will devote the time, energy and resources needed to ensure the success of the program.
As Parents of immersion students, it is important for you to make commitments. These include:

Agreeing to read in English every night at home to establish the foundation for English reading and writing
skills. Understanding that parents are responsible for their child’s acquisition of English reading and writing
skills. This will increase the amount of homework, (up to an additional hour each night), as compared to
students in general education program.

Understanding that there could be a lag of acquisition of English reading and writing skills.

Remaining in the immersion class throughout the elementary years enrolled in Humble I.S.D.

Being supportive and understanding of both your child and the program.

Understanding that student’s progress in English and Spanish will be monitored continuously. Understanding
that if the student begins to struggle academically as seen in English benchmarks; interventions will be
provided. If the student continues to struggle after interventions have been implemented, the Spanish
Immersion Review Committee may recommend her/his removal from the Spanish Immersion program and
placement in a general education classroom so as to ensure her/his academic success.

Ensuring that the student meets grade level expectations in reading at the end of each school year. (see below)

What language is spoken in your home most of the time? ________What language does your child speak most of the time? __________
(This program is designed for students that are very proficient in English literacy as previously described).
If an opening in 1st grade occurs after the first 10 days of the school year, my child could be considered for entry into the program
ONLY if s/he is reading at a level 8 or higher in English.
Do you want your child to be considered for an opening after the first 10 days of the school year? Yes:_____ No:_____
I understand that:
A. Spanish Immersion guidelines require that, in order for students to experience success, they are at an independent text level 6
(in English) with a comprehension level of 16 or higher by the end of the 2nd week in May of their first Kindergarten year, as
assessed by the HERSI (Humble Early Reading Survey Inventory). This criteria must be met together with kindergarten teacher
recommendation and campus assessment before being accepted into the program.
B. I will be notified by mail, of my child’s placement into the program or placement on the waiting list for the program, during the
last week of the 2013-2014 school year. If my child did not qualify for the Spanish Immersion program, I will be notified by
mail during the last week of the 2013-2014 school year.
C. There is an enrollment commitment to this program through the 5th grade. I will be supportive and understanding of both my
child and the Spanish Immersion program.
D. If more applications are received than positions are available, there will be a lottery to determine actual participants.
E. There could be a lag in acquisition of English reading/writing.
F.
It is especially important to read in English every night at home to establish the foundation for English reading and writing
skills.
G. I understand that my child’s progress will be monitored continuously. If s/he is not meeting benchmark expectations in English
based on the data collected, a conference with the campus Spanish Immersion Review Committee will be scheduled to
determine appropriate placement for academic success.
