University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust is one of the newest
and busiest NHS teaching Trusts in the country, caring for more than a million people from
across Coventry, Warwickshire and beyond.
We run University Hospital, Coventry and the Hospital of St Cross, Rugby. Our focus is on
high quality patient care, stringent infection control and key specialties including cardiology,
neurosurgery, stroke, joint replacements, IVF, diabetes, cancer care and kidney transplants.

University Hospital Coventry




Is home to the first PET scanner outside London. This cutting edge
technology and will be used in cancer diagnosis and treatment. Costing
£1.6 million, the PET CT scanner is among only a handful of its kind in
the UK and will end local cancer patients having to travel to London for
a specialist scan
Has over 8,000 hand basins. Every ward area has a sink placed at the
entrance to every bay for staff and visitors to wash their hands and
help reduce the risk of infection
Is the largest centre for 'living donor kidney transplants' in the NHS
Is one of a few Trusts in the West Midlands offering 24-hour primary

angioplasty treatment for heart attack
Has its own helicopter pad for the air ambulance to bring patients to the
hospital with major injuries and for specialist treatment
Has patient entertainment systems at every bedside equipped with TV,
radio and internet access

Treats almost 70,000 outpatients, 25,000 patients with minor
injuries or illnesses and carries out over 8,000 operations, every

Provides and manages the National Bowel Screening Programme
for the Central and North West regions
Is home to the Retinal Screening Programme for Coventry and
Warwickshire, which examines diabetic patients to identify
opthalmological (eye) damage and prevent further deterioration of
vision
Has five surgical theatres and an endoscopy suite. Two of the
theatres have specialised tented and extraction systems for patients
undergoing joint replacement or spinal surgery

Tissue Viability Award 2010
To UHCW Specialist Nurse Vanessa McDonagh for her work promoting the caring off
and preventing of pressure sores.

ICT Excellence Awards November 2009
VitalPAC (patient monitoring system) won the Best Added Value Project.

BT e-Health Insider Awards October 2009
The VitalPAC system was shortlisted under the category "Best use of wireless
healthcare".

Migraine Heroes Healthcare Awards – Best Healthcare Professional 2009
This award was given to neurologist Mohammed Belhag after he was nominated by a
patient. He managed to get her migraines under control without prescribing drugs or
performing surgery.

British Medical Association Highly Commended Award September 2009
This went to MS specialist nurse Wendy Hartland after writing a book on falls aimed at
those with MS aged between 20 and 40. This went on to become the most
downloaded leaflet from the MS Trust website.

Macular Disease Society Best Support Services Award September 2009
Adrian Sexton and the Low Vision Department won the Macular Disease Society’s
Best Support Services Award after being nominated by patients.

Innovative Health and Social Care Technology Award May 2009
The Centre for Reproductive Medicine won this award for dramatically increasing its
use of single embryo transfer for patients having IVF treatment and reducing its
multiple pregnancy rates. The new technology used involves improved embryo
selection by a longer period of culture in the laboratory; up to 7 days.

Regional Health and Social Care Awards May 2009
VitalPAC – Finalist for the Innovative Health and Social Care Technology Award,
having replaced traditional paper observation charts with electronic versions.

How We Are Run
Trust Board
Led by the Chairman and Chief Executive, the Trust Board is the principal decision making
forum of the Trust. It comprises Executive Directors and Directors in attendance who are
paid by the Trust for particular roles within the organisation, and Non-Executive Directors
who are members of the community appointed by the independent NHS Appointments
Commission. The primary roles of the Trust Board are to:




Set the strategic direction and key corporate objectives of the Trust
Monitor the Trust’s performance against those objectives
Be responsive to the local community and accountable to the Secretary of State for
services provided by the Trust
Ensure that the Trust fully complies with its statutory duties and the Code of Conduct and
Code of Accountability for NHS Boards issued by the Secretary of State for Health in
April 1994 (revised 2004)Public meetings of the Trust Board are held regularly and
provide the opportunity for staff, patients and the public to attend and to ask questions. In
addition, the Trust’s Annual Report is presented at the Annual Public Meeting. As part of
the Trust’s commitment to openness and accountability, the public is invited to attend any
public Trust Board meetings. All public Trust Board papers are published on the Trust’s
website.

Andrew Hardy
Chief Executive Officer since June 2010
Andrew is responsible for meeting all the statutory requirements of the Trust and is the
Trust’s Accountable Officer to Parliament. He also leads on the Foundation Trust application.

Richard Kennedy
Chief Medical Officer
Appointed August 2008, Richard is responsible for clinical governance, quality and patient
safety, information governance and non clinical risk and consultant appraisal. He joined the
Trust in 1988 as Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist.
He is also Director of the Centre for Reproductive Medicine (CRM) and a Specialist Advisor
to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority.
Dr Ann-Marie Cannaby
Chief Nursing and Operating Officer
Appointed February 2005 and responsible for infection control, safeguarding children,
nursing and midwifery. Ann-Marie joined the NHS in 1989 and was previously Head of
Nursing for Medicine and A&E Services for University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.
Christine Watts
Chief Marketing Officer

Appointed in May 2009 Christine joined the Trust from the private sector and is responsible
for all its communications with its staff, patients, partners and community and commercial
strategy. She also leads the public and patient involvement agenda, complaints, Patient
Advice and Liaison Service and ICT team.
Alan Jones
Acting Chief Finance Officer (since June 2010)
Alan is responsible for financial reporting, financial control, payroll and financial performance
management.
Ian Crich
Chief Human Resource Manager
Ian is Executive Director for estates (including Clinical Sciences Building, Private Finance
Initiative partnerships, environment and sustainability agendas), fire and security and library
services. These important areas will benefit from Ian’s focused leadership. He will also lead
on the equality and diversity agenda to ensure these are embedded in all of our Trust
practises and processes.

UHCW NHS Trust fully supports the NHS drive to eradicate mixed wards. The Trust has
