A variable amount of out of hours work in liaison with OMFS and Plastic surgery may be required. b) Teaching Responsibility Possible involvement in the teaching of medical students, dentists and trainee dental nurses. c) Research Involvement The holder of the post will undertake a research project leading to an MSc under the guidance of the consultants responsible. Facilities for such work will be made available. d) Clinical Administrative Work Maintenance of patient’s departmental records in conjunction with audit and the completion of necessary patient summaries and the writing of letters as appropriate. LOCATION OF POST: The successful candidate will be based at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, and will be required to attend the Eastman Dental Hospital, London, during the University term for one day a week (usually Friday) to fulfil the requirements of the teaching programme leading to the Membership in Orthodontics. COVER FOR ABSENCE OF COLLEAGUES: Duties include to cover the sickness or absence of colleagues during their annual or study leave. There is no on-call commitment for the post. STUDY AND TRAINING a) Postgraduate training recognition recognised for the MOrth and equivalent by the Royal College of Surgeons. Study leave facilities are available. b) Library facilities are available in the John Radcliffe Hospital. Journal Club, a monthly departmental audit meeting and regional audit/clinical governance meetings are organised. ACCOMMODATION: The post is non residential and if accommodation is required a charge will be made. HIGHER TRAINING PROGRAMME IN ORTHODONTICS Job Summary The three-year training programme, has full approval from the SAC and the Postgraduate Dean, is designed to enable the Specialty Registrar to train for the Membership in Orthodontics examination of the Royal College of Surgeons. The specialty registrar is based at the John Radcliffe Hospital 4 days per week and at the Eastman (on average) one day a week. The StR will attend the initial intensive introductory course and this will be followed by visits on a weekly basis to coincide with the Academic day (normally Friday). The StR will attend some of the short intensive courses held in conjunction with the full time course as outlined in the academic programme. The MSc is a requirement of the training programme, to be primarily supervised at Oxford in conjunction with a second Supervisor from the academic staff at the Eastman. Comprehensive training will be given in assessment and treatment planning and in a variety of treatment techniques. The StR will be involved in the orthodontic management of patients requiring orthognathic surgery and minor oral surgical procedures. There will also be a commitment to research and clinical audit. Conditions of Appointment Applicants for the post must be fully registered with the General Dental Council and are recommended to have the MJDF examination or equivalent. Main conditions of Service The duration of the training programme is three years, subject to a satisfactory annual appraisal assessment. Membership of the NHS superannuation scheme is automatic, contributions being deducted at the rate of 6% of gross salary. However, appointees have the opportunity to opt out by returning the application to leave the NHS Pension Scheme (form SD502). This is a non-residential appointment, although accommodation may be available for rental. The SpR is expected to live within a reasonable distance of the hospital in order to gain maximum benefit from the training. Courses to allow Trust medical staff to obtain the IRMER 2003 certificate are available through the Department of Medical Physics, Churchill. NESC DEANERY ORTHODONTIC REGISTRAR - JOHN RADCLIFFE HOSPITAL, OXFORD The Department of Oral Surgery and Orthodontics is sited adjacent to the main Outpatients in the John Radcliffe Hospital, situated approximately three miles from the centre of Oxford, in Headington. The John Radcliffe Hospital is a busy district teaching hospital serving both the immediate population and those in an area extending well beyond the county boundaries. Approximately 2,500 new patients a year are seen within the joint department, 500 - 800 of which are orthodontic. This post is designed to enable the registrar to train for the Membership in Orthodontics and to prepare an MSc in Orthodontics. The initial programme will require the registrar to work at the John Radcliffe Hospital for four days a week. Arrangements are made for the Registrar to attend the Eastman Dental Hospital for one day a week for didactic teaching, tutorials and lectures as appropriate to extend over a period of three years commencing at the start of the academic year 2009. The registrar will be responsible for the payment of fees over that 3-year period. Clinical training will be at the John Radcliffe Hospital under the supervision of the consultant orthodontists, assisted by the FTTA and associate specialist. Comprehensive training and instruction will be given in diagnosis and treatment planning for malocclusions and their subsequent treatment using a variety of treatment techniques. The registrar will be further involved with the planning, management and treatment related to surgical orthodontic patients and will have the opportunity to discuss details of surgery with surgical colleagues. There are six OMFS consultants, three specialist registrars and eight senior house officers in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. There is a well-equipped laboratory with three technicians. There is a comprehensive library with the appropriate search facilities and Internet access. It has a good selection of American and European journals of Orthodontics and standard textbooks. A PC, digitiser and scanner with appropriate software for recording cases and planning orthodontic surgery is available. Digital photographic facilities are provided for all the requirements for fully documented cases to comply with the regulations of the examination of the Membership in Orthodontics. The SpecialTY Registrar room has a PC and printer and the department’s computer room houses a PC and a digitiser for planning cases. Digital photography facilities are provided by the Trust which fulfil the requirements of the Membership of Orthodontics examination.
