PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
a)
Clinical Work
The day to day care of patients in clinics as appropriate to the grade of the post and under
the direction of the consultants responsible, together with any technical work within the
laboratory as required, to involve eight out-patients sessions per week which will be
arranged under the direction of the consultants. A variable amount of out of hours work in
liaison with OMFS and Plastic surgery may be required.
b)
Teaching Responsibility
Possible involvement in the teaching of medical students, dentists and trainee dental
nurses.
c)
Research Involvement
The holder of the post will undertake a research project leading to an MSc under the
guidance of the consultants responsible. Facilities for such work will be made available.
d)
Clinical Administrative Work
Maintenance of patient’s departmental records in conjunction with audit and the completion
of necessary patient summaries and the writing of letters as appropriate.
LOCATION OF POST:
The successful candidate will be based at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, and will be required
to attend the Eastman Dental Hospital, London, during the University term for one day a week
(usually Friday) to fulfil the requirements of the teaching programme leading to the Membership in
Orthodontics.
COVER FOR ABSENCE OF COLLEAGUES:
Duties include to cover the sickness or absence of colleagues during their annual or study leave.
There is no on-call commitment for the post.
STUDY AND TRAINING
a)
Postgraduate training recognition recognised for the MOrth and equivalent by the Royal
College of Surgeons. Study leave facilities are available.
b)
Library facilities are available in the John Radcliffe Hospital.
Journal Club, a monthly departmental audit meeting and regional audit/clinical governance
meetings are organised.
ACCOMMODATION:
The post is non residential and if accommodation is required a charge will be made.
HIGHER TRAINING PROGRAMME IN ORTHODONTICS
Job Summary
The three-year training programme, has full approval from the SAC and the Postgraduate Dean, is
designed to enable the Specialty Registrar to train for the Membership in Orthodontics examination
of the Royal College of Surgeons.
The specialty registrar is based at the John Radcliffe Hospital 4 days per week and at the Eastman
(on average) one day a week.

Training
The academic aspect of the training will be carried out at the Eastman Dental Hospital in
conjunction with their formal orthodontic course. The StR will attend the initial intensive
introductory course and this will be followed by visits on a weekly basis to coincide with the
Academic day (normally Friday). The StR will attend some of the short intensive courses held in
conjunction with the full time course as outlined in the academic programme. The MSc is a
requirement of the training programme, to be primarily supervised at Oxford in conjunction with a
second Supervisor from the academic staff at the Eastman.
Comprehensive training will be given in assessment and treatment planning and in a variety of
treatment techniques. The StR will be involved in the orthodontic management of patients requiring
orthognathic surgery and minor oral surgical procedures. There will also be a commitment to
research and clinical audit.
Conditions of Appointment
Applicants for the post must be fully registered with the General Dental Council and are
recommended to have the MJDF examination or equivalent.
Main conditions of Service
The duration of the training programme is three years, subject to a satisfactory annual appraisal
assessment.
Membership of the NHS superannuation scheme is automatic, contributions being deducted at the
rate of 6% of gross salary. However, appointees have the opportunity to opt out by returning the
application to leave the NHS Pension Scheme (form SD502).
This is a non-residential appointment, although accommodation may be available for rental. The
SpR is expected to live within a reasonable distance of the hospital in order to gain maximum
benefit from the training.
All other terms and conditions of employment are in accordance with NHS Terms & Conditions of
Service for Hospital Medical and Dental Staff (England and Wales) and General Whitley Councils
(Great Britain) as amended from time to time.

MEDICAL STAFF WHO WILL BE UNDERTAKING EXPOSURE PRONE PROCEDURES
WILL BE REQUIRED TO PROVIDE WRITTEN PROOF OF HEPATITIS B VACCINATION AND
ANTIBIODY STATUS, BCG AND RUBELLA VACCINATION. IN THE ABSENCE OF SUCH
EVIDENCE THE POSTHOLDER WILL NOT BE PLACED ON THE PAYROLL OR
UNDERTAKE CLINICAL WORK UNTIL THE EVIDENCE IS PRODUCED TO THE
SATISFACTION OF THE TRUST.
IRMER 2003:
The Trust requires that any doctor or dentist who directs the use of x-rays for procedures such as cardiac
catheterisation, pacemaker insertions, orthopaedic procedures, etc. in patient investigation or administers
radioisotopes to patients possesses a IRMER 2003 certificate as proof of training in accordance with the
“Ionising Radiation (Protection of Persons Undergoing Medical Examination or Treatment) Regulations”,
and submits a copy of their certificate to the Medical Staffing Department. Courses to allow Trust medical
staff to obtain the IRMER 2003 certificate are available through the Department of Medical Physics,
Churchill.
CAREER ADVICE:

INDEMNITY:
Under NHS Indemnity, the Trust will take direct responsibility for costs and damages arising from medical
negligence where it (as employer) is vicariously liable for the acts and omissions of its medical and dental
staff.
Where junior medical staff are involved in the care of private patients in a NHS hospital, they would
normally be doing so as part of their contract. It is advisable that junior doctors who are involved in work
outside his/her employment should have medical defence cover. This includes Category 2 work, i.e. reports
for insurance companies, cremation fees.
STATEMENT ON ‘NEW DEAL’ FOR JUNIOR DOCTORS:
The Postgraduate Oxford Deanery Task Force responsible for implementing this joint medical
profession/Department of Health Initiative on junior doctors’ hours is committed to achieving the principles
as set out in the New Deal, and the Trust is working closely with this group.
The working arrangements for training posts is continually reviewed, to incorporate the requirements of The
New Deal and changes created by the developing structure of the Oxford Radcliffe Hospital NHS Trust, and
there may be some variations to the content of this post.
NESC DEANERY
ORTHODONTIC REGISTRAR - JOHN RADCLIFFE HOSPITAL, OXFORD
The Department of Oral Surgery and Orthodontics is sited adjacent to the main Outpatients in the
John Radcliffe Hospital, situated approximately three miles from the centre of Oxford, in
Headington. The John Radcliffe Hospital is a busy district teaching hospital serving both the
immediate population and those in an area extending well beyond the county boundaries.
Approximately 2,500 new patients a year are seen within the joint department, 500 - 800 of which
are orthodontic.
This post is designed to enable the registrar to train for the Membership in Orthodontics and to
prepare an MSc in Orthodontics. The initial programme will require the registrar to work at the
John Radcliffe Hospital for four days a week. Arrangements are made for the Registrar to attend
the Eastman Dental Hospital for one day a week for didactic teaching, tutorials and lectures as
appropriate to extend over a period of three years commencing at the start of the academic year
2009. The registrar will be responsible for the payment of fees over that 3-year period.
Clinical training will be at the John Radcliffe Hospital under the supervision of the consultant
orthodontists, assisted by the FTTA and associate specialist. Comprehensive training and instruction
will be given in diagnosis and treatment planning for malocclusions and their subsequent treatment
using a variety of treatment techniques. The registrar will be further involved with the planning,
management and treatment related to surgical orthodontic patients and will have the opportunity to
discuss details of surgery with surgical colleagues. There are six OMFS consultants, three specialist
registrars and eight senior house officers in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
There is a well-equipped laboratory with three technicians. There is a comprehensive library with
the appropriate search facilities and Internet access. It has a good selection of American and
European journals of Orthodontics and standard textbooks. A PC, digitiser and scanner with
appropriate software for recording cases and planning orthodontic surgery is available. Digital
photographic facilities are provided for all the requirements for fully documented cases to comply
with the regulations of the examination of the Membership in Orthodontics.
The SpecialTY Registrar room has a PC and printer and the department’s computer room houses a
PC and a digitiser for planning cases. Digital photography facilities are provided by the Trust which
fulfil the requirements of the Membership of Orthodontics examination.
