Enniscorthy (often referred to as the ‘Model County’) is nestled in the sunny
Southeast in County Wexford. It is located in the Slaney Valley, on the banks of the
river Slaney. The County is renowned for its warm climate, scenic mountains,
valleys, rivers, and beaches spanning 200 km of coastline.
Enniscorthy is situated 20 kilometers north west of Wexford town and 122 kilometres
south of Dublin on the N11. Neighbouring towns include Blackwater, Bunclody,
Cahore, Duncannon, Enniscorthy, Ferns, Fethard on Sea, Gorey, Hook Head, Kilmore
Quay, New Ross, Rosslare and Wexford Town.
The name Enniscorthy means ' island of the Corthaige' a people who lived there in the
4th and 5th century. It is an old Norman settlement and a town steeped in history and
culture. It was the object of many attacks in the centuries following the AngloNorman invasion and a storm centre of the 1798 Rising, and is overlooked by the old
1798 battle site of Vinegar Hill. On the west bank of the river, the Gothic church of
Saint Aidans reminds us that Enniscorthy is the Cathedral town of the county. This
church was designed by Pugin in 1847.
Enniscorthy is a market town with a growing population of approximately 8,964 and
offers amenities such as Golf clubs, Greyhound Racing and a Swimming Pool &
Leisure Complex in Templeshannon. Dominating the town is the Norman Castle,
Enniscorthy Castle which was completed in 1205 and was the site of many fierce
battles. Today, it houses the County Wexford Museum, which contains thousands of
items of memorabilia from events such as the 1798 rebellion, the battle at Vinegar
Hill and the 1916 rising.
Close to the town there are beaches, forest and river walks as well as ancient Dolmens
and Bronze Age remains. Enniscorthy has a well developed crafts industry with
companies such as Kiltrea Bridge Pottery offering hand crafted garden, patio and
conservatory pots. Bellefield Design offers a variety of handmade goods from handturned lamps and tables in native hardwoods to bean bags, rosettes and reflective
wear. Picture framing is also available for that special photograph, painting or
tapestry.
Enniscorthy and its neighbouring towns offer services and facilities that should suit
most requirements. These are outlined in the following pages. The Appendices at the
end of this document provides contact details for a range of services available in
Enniscorthy and the surrounding areas such as transport, healthcare, dining out,
entertainment, sports clubs and shopping. This list does not mean to be exhaustive
but intends to give an insight into what’s available. It is important to note that this
information is as up to date as possible. However, you are advised to contact the
service you wish to utilise beforehand to ensure they are still in operation.

Wexford has plenty to offer with its unique culture and heritage attractions and its
open air museum of ramparts and castles, abbeys, manor houses and one of the oldest
operational lighthouses in the world, Hook Lighthouse (see below for details).
Famous for the range and extent of bird life, it also features bird watch reserves, the
most significant being that of North Sloblands, Wexford Wildfowl Reserve. The
Wexford Slobs and Harbour are, by their very location a natural haven for birds.
Situated on the coast, and in sight of the south east corner of Ireland, it is the closest
point to Britain and the continent for birds that are migrating into or out of Ireland
from a southerly direction.
Waders and wildfowl in particular, are attracted to the area where the flat landscape is
accentuated by a number of complementary characteristics that create a safe place to
feed, loaf, roost and breed. Two hundred and sixty-three bird species have been
recorded to date of which sixty-nine are considered common in winter, with a further
thirty-seven being categorised as scarce. Not only are the slobs and harbour of major
international importance for their waders and wildfowl during the winter but also
during spring and autumn when large numbers of birds on migration stop to feed in
these rich areas. It is during the winter months that the Wexford Slobs and Harbour
come into their own. From early October right through to the middle of April, the
North and South Slobs and the harbour are home to thousands of ducks, geese, waders
and swans.
Gardens lovers will thoroughly enjoy the very famous John F. Kennedy Park. and
Arboretum celebrating the connection US President Kennedy has with the town of
New Ross where you will also find Ireland's newest attraction, the Dunbrody Heritage
Ship which is an accurate, full size, ocean-going recreation of the actual timber-built
ship which played a leading part in 19th century emigration to the USA. The only
complete dolmen in the county is at Bree, south of Enniscorthy. This dates from the
3rd millennium B.C. For the residents and visitors alike, there should be plenty to
appeal all tastes in the sunny south east.

Ferns Castle and Churches
Ferns Castle is a 13th century castle built by William de
Valance built on the site of a much earlier castle. The 13th
century castle was dismantled by Sir Charles Coote in
1641.The original castle was owned by King Dermot
McMurrough. McMurrough's castle was destroyed by the
28
O'Rourkes and the O'Connors.
In revenge, McMurrough gained the support of the Normans, led by Strongbow, who
conquered them. Close to the Castle are the remains of an Augustinian Priory that was
founded by Dermot and where he is buried. .He is believed to be buried under the
ancient High Cross.
Near this monument, is the Cathedral, which was built in the 19th century. The
original Cathedral was built on the remains of one burned in 1577. While the new
Cathedral was being built, a monument to St. Mogue was discovered and is now
preserved in the Cathedral.

Irish history.
When the Normans built a castle they built it to last. Enniscorthy
Castle, in the centre of the town and overlooking the Slaney River,
proves the point. Nearly 800 years after its construction, the huge
castle is still in remarkable condition. Though restored and
modernised in recent times many original features remain.
The three drum towers which flank the castle are classics of their
kind. Down the centuries the castle has had many owners,
including the poet Edmund Spenser. It is said that he was given
the castle by Elizabeth 1 of England in gratitude for his epic 'The
Faerie Queen' which said many flattering things about her.
Nowadays, Enniscorthy Castle is the home of the County Wexford Historical and
Folk Museum

Housed in the imposing Norman Castle built by the Prendergast family in the 13th
century. Holds a wide range of items of local origin and wide interest.
The setting for the County Museum is that of the Old
Norman Castle, built in the first quarter of the 13th
century by the Prendergast family. First opened on
Easter Sunday, 1962, it illustrates in a magnificent way
the storied past of the county in all its varied aspects,
ecclesiastical, military, maritime, agriculture and
industrial. Of particular interest are the fine collections
commemorating the rising of 1798 and 1916.

Duncannon
This is a pleasant seaside resort with a good sandy beach, on the eastern shore of
Waterford Harbour. On a rocky headland guarding the approach to the estuary is
Duncannon Fort, covering an area of about three acres. This was the site of the
prehistoric dun of Conan, after which the town was named. In the twelfth century it
was selected for defensive purposes by the Anglo-Normans, and in 1588 the English
government strengthened the fortifications as a precaution against the Spanish
Armada. During the wars of the seventeenth century the fort was taken by the
Confederate Catholics after a two-month siege. It was later defended against a
Cromwellian force, and only surrendered in 1650 after the capitulation of Waterford.
Duncannon Lighthouse
The oldest of its kind in Ireland, this lighthouse was built in 1744. Two types of lenses
are used, white to signal ships are on course and red to warn that they are off course.

Duncannon Fort is a star shaped fort built at a
strategically important promontory in Waterford
Harbour. It was built in 1588 in the expectation of
an attack on the area by the Spanish Armada.
There had previously been a Celtic fort and a
Norman castle on the site. The fort is noted for its
dry moat, exterior walls and the legend of the
croppy boy. Restoration work is still in progress.
