Folk Arts Workshops at Landmark Park
Landmark Park is excited to announce the Folk Arts Workshop Weekend. Visitors will be introduced to a
variety of folk crafts and skills. Participants can choose a different topic of interest for each session. All
sessions are three-hours unless otherwise noted. Session topics vary and are listed below. Registration is
required and can be made by calling the park at 334-794-3452. Prices depend on supplies needed and range
from $20-$30. All classes are small, so space is limited.

Choose from one of the following programs.

1.)
Chair Bottoms and Caning Basics
Teacher: Roy Cooley and Billy Lawson
Price: $20 for members / $25 for non members
Bring your own stools or small chairs to this step by step course for beginning chair caners. Your instructors
will give a brief introduction on replacing chair bottoms using caning materials or binder twine and then be on
hand to offer tips on technique during the hands-on portion. We will have plenty of chairs on hand for those
who don’t wish to bring their own. Chairs should be in good repair before you come and will have to be
finished at home.
2.)
Beginning Blacksmithing
Teacher: Steve Lowery
Price: $25 for members / $30 for non members
Beginners will be introduced to the coal forge as well as the basics of working with steel using the anvil.
Participants will learn basic forging techniques and tools, as well as fire management and will have plenty of
time to test the skills they have learned with hands-on practice time with the forge. Participants will make an
item using the basic forging techniques.
3.)
Cooking on the Hearth
Teacher: Liz Olliff
Price: $20 for members / $25 for non members
Cooking on the Hearth will introduce participants to making your own mouth-watering foods without the use of
electricity. This session will give participants the chance to cook a variety of foods including, meats, stews and
breads on the hearth with fire and a dutch oven. This session is ideal for campers in search of new meal time
techniques or anyone interested in learning about how our ancestors kept their families fed.
4.)
**Gourd Painting
Teacher: Jeannie Bozeman
Price: $15 for members / $20 for non members
Painters of all levels are invited to select his or her own nature scene or image from our collection or bring your
own for this gourd painting session. Students will learn this interesting folk tradition that was started by the
Indians with dipper bowls. Pick your own special gourd type from a Martin to Kettle gourd. We provide all the
materials including paints, brushes, and gourds. Please wear old clothing or a smock. This is a two session
workshop.
5.)
Mule Plowing
Teacher: Mike Flemming and Todd Taylor
Assistant: Kate the mule
Price: $25 for members / $20 for non members
Learn the time-honored tradition of plowing with a mule. The class will begin with an introduction to some
basic knowledge about horses and mules and how one is harnessed to till the soil. Everyone will have the
opportunity to plow with “Kate” and experience a once very common task on area farms.
Saturday Afternoon Session: 1:00-4:00
Choose from one of the following programs:
1.)
Intermediate Blacksmithing
Teacher: Steve Lowery
Price: $15 for members / $20 for non members
Students must have participated in Beginning Blacksmithing to continue with an intermediate coarse in coal
forging as well as continue working with steel using the anvil. Participants will develop forging techniques and
tools, as well as fire management and will have plenty of time to test the skills they have learned with hands-on
practice time with the forge. Participants will make an item using the intermediate forging techniques.
2.)
Dutch Oven Cooking
Teacher: John Brolund
Price: $25 for members / $30 for non members
This class is especially good for hunters, scout leaders and outdoors people. This is a hands on cooking class in
which we use a 6 foot fire pit for cooking a variety of foods which may include: biscuits, pies, quiche,
casseroles chili or stew.
3.)
Tatting
Teacher: Bennie Kennedy
Price: $15 for members / $20 for non members
This workshop offers visitors a chance to learn how to make a durable lace. Students will be taught to produce a
series of knots and loops to make lace edging. Can be applied to make collars, doilies, accessories, and other
pieces.
4.)

*Beginning Dulcimer
Teacher: Dulcimer Club
Price: $15 for members / $20 for non members
Learn the basics of playing the Appalachian dulcimer, a fretted string instrument that originated in the
Appalachian region of the United States. Members of the Landmark Dulcimer Club, which meets here at the
park monthly, will guide you through the steps of learning to play this unique instrument. Dulcimers will be
provided for this class, or you can bring you own. Note: This class is one-hour in length and two sessions are
offered.
4.)
Pottery
Teacher: Lynn Konning
Price: $20 for members / $25 for non members
Local artist, Lynn Konning, will introduce participants to the basics of pottery including working with the
potter’s wheel. Pottery takes practice and patience and can tend to get a little muddy. Dress appropriately!
