New England Genealogy Collections Outside of New England Here is a list of outstanding New England genealogy "collections" - *not* in New England. These "collections" were mentioned in postings on genealogy mail lists (NORTHEAST-ROOTS-L, ESSEX-ROOTS-L, GenConnecticut-L, and CT-WINDHAMCO), CompuServe's (CSi) North American Genealogy Forum (NAROOTS), and personal experience. These "collections" have the basic New England reference sources, back issues of The New England Historical and Genealogical Register (NEHGR) and/or other genealogy journals, DAR and Mayflower material, published vital records, assorted town/county histories and/or family genealogies. Many have complete runs of the census for the entire US, city directories, and other valuable microfilmed materials. This list may be helpful to newer as well as experienced researchers to identify major New England genealogy collections outside of the New England area. Many "newbies" feel if they don't live in New England near such resource centers as the NEHGS library, town clerk offices, New England state libraries and archives, etc... that New England genealogy research is nearly impossible. Most *do* know about the LDS Family History Centers (FHC) Family History Information/What Is a Family History Center? http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp?PAGE=library_fhc_about.asp Family History Information/Where Is the Nearest Family History Center? http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp?PAGE=library_fhc_find.asp and their fabulous Family History Library in Salt Lake City Family History Library and Centers http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library/FHL/frameset_library.asp Family History Library Catalog http://www.familysearch.org/Search/searchcatalog.asp as well as the great New England Historic and Genealogical Society’s Library http://www.NewEnglandAncestors.org/ The Library: http://www.newenglandancestors.org/libraries/main/ http://www.library.nehgs.org/ which are indispensable. However, many New England "rooters" may not be aware of other major collections outside New England that might be closer to their homes. The research collections are usually located at the main branch for the library system named. I have tried to include websites if they are online. Be aware I'm *not* personally familiar with 90% of the facilities. A website has been set up based on this file. As a webpage the URLs/online addresses of the "collections" are hyperlinked for immediate usage. The website also contains a downloadable copy of this file. http://home.earthlink.net/~sgtwebgen/NECollections.html Please, additions and/or corrections are *welcomed! Feel free to share this file with one and all. Many thanks to all the contributors! --- Susan G. Taylor sgtwebgen@earthlink.net --- Last Updated 9 July 2006 --- United States: Washington, D.C.
