Computing Services Department
The computer services department in the Institute of Technology Tallaght is
currently looking to recruit an IT Technician to fill a vacancy in our Computer
Services Department. The computer services team provides technology solutions and
support to the Institute. We support a diverse range of equipment with deployment
of leading edge technologies to over 500 staff and 5 thousand students. The
department is led by the IT Manager with two functional teams, client services team
and network and infrastructure team.
The successful candidate will initially be joining our client services team. Currently
the client services team consists of four technical staff comprising one senior
technical officer and three technical officers with one vacancies.
The role of the client services team is to focus on our customers and ensure that all
services are available and reliable. Our customers include all Institute of Technology
Tallaght staff and students.. There is a close working relationship between the client
services team and the network and infrastructure team.
Services and Resources:
The services and resources are wide ranging and varied. The staff requirements are
different from the student requirements but in some cases there is an overlap.
Staff services range from the services that are common to all staff to services that
are specific to functional areas.
Services that are common to all staff include the following –
 Providing staff with a Desktop Computer/Device which includes image build
and deployment
 IT support to approximately 500 staff
 Password reset service
 Provision of a support ticket system. 1825 support tickets were successfully
completed for the calendar year 2014 by the client services team.
 Provision/de provision of staff accounts and network drive mappings
 Application install and support
 Printing, copying and scanning (managed print service which includes 70
mfd’s)
 Internet access support (Browser support)
 Remote access to services and applications using Microsoft RDS in a Hyper-V
environment.
 Staff Help Desk
 Staff laptop loan service
 Manage the deployment of Windows updates using Microsoft System Center
 Malware, Anti-virus protection
 Assist with connecting end user devices (mobile phones, tablets and laptops)
to Eduroam wireless system
 Video Conferencing and Digital signage support
 Software license management
 Deploy and support 50 podium computers in our lecture theatres
Student support includes:
 Provide IT support to all students in the school of business and humanities
 Help desk support open 5 days a week from 9 to 5. Open two evenings per
week from 5:30 to 7:00.
 Support for 10 student labs including 167 windows workstations and 20
Apple imacs
 Assist with connecting portable devices to Eduroam wireless service
 Laptop support to school of business students who avail of laptops from the
access office and the disability office
Person specification:
Minimum Eligibility Requirements
 Computing/ICT Ordinary Degree (Level 7) and at least one year’s postgraduate
experience.
 Ability to take initiative, give leadership and work with people.
 Good organisational, communication and interpersonal skills.
 Evidence of personal development through further skills development
 Good technical knowledge.
Skills and Competencies required
 Front-end customer focused.
 Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
 Enthusiasm for working with staff and students with wide ranging knowledge
of IT.
 Comfortable working part of a team as well as the ability to work
independently and take initiative when appropriate.
 Good troubleshooting skills with the ability to get to the root cause of
problems.
 Comfortable with telephone support and fixing problems remotely.
 Good prioritization skills.
Knowledge and Experience desired
 Knowledge of installing and configuring PCs, laptops and tablet devices.
 Knowledge of Windows (Windows 7, windows 8/8.1) operating systems and
Apple Mac IOS would be useful.
 Knowledge of Windows Active Directory, Group Policy.
 Experience in deploying applications, windows updates, virus and spyware
protection.
 Experience of using System Centre Configuration Manager would be useful
but not a pre-requisite.
 Experience of License manager tools.
 Experience of debugging windows event viewer and log files.
 Experience and understanding of Windows profiles.
 Experience of Virtualisation and associated management tools.
Computing Services Technician
The Technician will report to the Senior Technical Officer, or his nominee, as
appropriate and will be required to work closely with students, management,
academic, technical and other staff.

Eligibility to compete is open to candidates who are citizens of the European Economic Area

As the rules relating to membership of these schemes contain a number of exceptions, if the

appointee shall be obliged to make pension contributions in accordance with the rules of the
applicable scheme and the appointee shall be subject to the applicable scheme’s provisions

Proposed merger of Three Institutes
Please note that it is planned that three institutions in the Dublin region – Dublin Institute
of Technology (DIT), Institute of Technology, Blanchardstown (ITB) and Institute of
Technology, Tallaght (ITTD) will merge into a single institution to form the new Dublin
Institute of Technology, prior to seeking designation as a Technological University for
Dublin. Thereafter staff may be assigned or re-assigned to any of the buildings / centres in
the new Dublin Institute of Technology, at the discretion of the Institute.
Please note that the rate of remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in line with
Government pay policy.
