CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Igneous topics include principles of igneous petrology;
generation, emplacement and crystallization of magma; phase chemistry; principles of igneous
rock classification; the relationship of magma types to geologic setting. Metamorphic topics
include principles of metamorphic petrology; metamorphic reactions and phase chemistry;
concepts of metamorphic grade, P-T regimes and relationships to geologic environments.
PREREQUISITE: GEOL 3401 or consent of instructor

OUTCOME COMPETENCIES: Upon completion of the course the student will
1. know the major classification, nomenclature and textures of igneous rocks.
2. be able to recognize igneous structures and be familiar with their relationships.
3. understand chemistry and thermodynamics of igneous rock formation
4. have knowledge of the generation of different types of magma, including where and how
they may form.
5. know the major classification, nomenclature and textures of metamorphic rocks.
6. have knowledge of metamorphic minerals and how they are related in metamorphic
facies.
7. understand common metamorphic reactions and their thermodynamics

COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Students will be evaluated by examinations, quizzes, etc.as
described in this syllabus under the heading “Evaluation”.
EVALUATION:
University Grading System: A=90-100, B=80-89, C=70-79, D=60-69, F=below 60.
The final class grade will be based on the average of grades that are earned as listed below.
