Students will demonstrate correct ballhandling, passing, dribbling, and shooting techniques by scoring a 75% or higher on a skills test at the end of the unit. 2. Students will demonstrate a knowledge of the rules and history of basketball by scoring 80% or above on a written rules exam 3. Students will be honest while self-assessing and assessing other students. This is done in a partner situation with shooting drills. 6 Objectives: Psychomotor Performance: 1. Students will demonstrate correct passing technique by completing three out of five good passes to a target on the skills test at the end of the unit. Evaluation will be partner assessment. 2. Students will demonstrate good dribbling skills by dribbling down the court and back in less than 17 seconds on the skills test at the end of the unit. 3. Students will demonstrate correct shooting skills by hitting six out of ten free throws on the skills test at the end of the unit. Evaluation will be partner assessment and distance measurement. 4. Students will practice the ball-handling skills using correct technique with a partner. Evaluation will be partner assessment. -Checklist 5. Students will demonstrate knowledge of the rules by scoring 80% or above on the written exam. 2. Students will show an understanding of basketball strategies by participating in game like situation. 3. Students will demonstrate general knowledge of a basketball game. This is assessed by teacher observation during games and by a written test at the end of the unit. 4. Students will demonstrate an understanding for the importance of fundamentals in a basketball game. This is assessed by teacher observation during games. 5. Students will learn and understand the history of basketball. This is assessed by the written exam at the end of the unit 8 Affective Performance: 1. Students will demonstrate good social skills by working within a group and with a partner. 2. Students will use good sportsmanship by participating in competitions and encourage their teammates and opponents to succeed. 3. Students will be honest while self-assessing and assessing other students. This is done in a partner situation. 4. Students will show a positive attitude while participating in basketball drills and games, by smiling and encouraging others. 5. Students will be motivated and ready for participation each day for the entire basketball unit plan. 9 Physical Fitness: 1. Students will be able to perform fitness activities continuously for 5 minutes, on a daily basis. 2. Students will practice locomotor skills on cue for 30 seconds each locomotor, for 2 minutes total 3. Students will be engaged in cardiovascular warm-up continuously for 3 minutes on a daily basis. 4. Students will participate in leader activities and stretching daily. 5. Students will use basketball skills such as passing, dribbling, shooting, and ball-handling with partners, in a group, or individually. 10 Unit: Basketball Class: Coed Size: 20 Students Grade: 6th Grade Skill Level: Beginner to intermediate Special Considerations: Shooting: If cannot get the ball to basket, teacher may lower goal if possible. Students may also move closer to the basket. Passing: If drills are too complicated the students may move back to partner drills Ballhandling: If the students cannot keep up with the average pace, then the teacher should let them slow down for better performance. 11 Pre-Assessment: Pre-test of Skills: Students will be tested on passing, dribbling, ballhandling, and shooting performance, as well as, the rules and history. Students will be with a partner and given a checklist to grade each other’s skill level. Teacher observation will also be used to assess skill level. 12 Skills to be taught: Rules History Ballhandling Passing Dribbling Shooting 13 Skill Cues: Rules: 5 players, must dribble when running with the ball (traveling), stay inbounds, 2 points per FG, 3 pts for 3-pointers, 1 point per free throw. History: Invention, Olympic History and sport history Ballhandling: Passing: fingers loose, spread hands out, low dribbles, head up Thumbs behind ball, extend the arms, follow thru with thumbs extended, step towards target Dribbling: low dribbles, head up, stay low, bend knees, do not use palm, use fingertips. Shooting: B.E.E.F. Balance, Elbow, Eyes, Follow Thru, feet shoulder width apart, gain balance, keep eyes on target, middle finger in center of basketball, raise elbow, keep elbow under the basketball, follow thru and extend up towards the basket, hold the follow thru 14 Equipment Needed: 12 Basketballs 2 Courts 4 Goals Cones 15 Safety 1. Students need to be aware of balls rolling. Students need to be reminded that when the whistle blows, all balls are to be place on the hips. 2. When passing, students must be aware of balls coming to them and to pay attention at all times. Also, when a student passes the basketball, be sure the other student is alert and anticipating the pass to come to them. 3. Be sure the students keep their head up while dribbling to avoid collisions with other students or objects. 16 Facilities Needed: For maximum participation, gymnasium with two courts is recommended. Failure to do so will result in a conference between teacher, student, parent, and administration. Students will be graded on: 1. Partner Assessment checklist 2.
