2013-2014 Lamar FFA Barn Rules ***All FFA members must abide by the following rules*** 1. Eligibility- Only FFA and Junior FFA members in good standing may utilize the FFA farm facility. 2. Animals Allowed at the Lamar FFA Farm- Animals that will be allowed to be housed will consist of cattle, sheep, goats, swine, and poultry. Any exceptions must be granted by the Lamar High School FFA advisors in writing. No male breeding animals of any species are allowed at the farm. 3. Liability- At no time can Houston ISD, Lamar FFA, Lamar High School nor any other school employee or administrator be held liable of death of an animal project. These individuals will not be held liable for any injury to a student, student's guest or family members while at this facility. *Any injuries or hazards should be reported to an FFA advisor immediately. 4. Prior Approval- This facility is intended for the use of Lamar FFA students only. All animal projects must be approved by a Lamar High School FFA advisor, and assigned a stall, BEFORE being brought to the farm. This includes heifers previously housed at the farm and moved away for breeding or other purposes. 5. Verification of Animal Eligibility- Heifer projects that extend into another show season must receive permission to remain at the project center. Pregnancy certification may be required depending on the eligibility requirements for the breed. 6. Visitors- Only students and family who house projects at the facility are allowed access to the facility. Any other individuals must receive approval from an agriculture teacher after undergoing a background check. 7. Prior Approval- Before moving a project into the facility a student must complete the following: a. Obtain permission from the Lamar High School agriculture teachers. b. In the case of heifers, the registration papers and pregnancy certification (if required), must be provided to the agriculture teacher. c. Students and Parents must sign the member handbook stating that both have read and understand the rules and consequences of the FFA farm facility. d. If the animal is a market animal that will be shown at the Lamar FFA school show, the exhibitor must comply with all the requirements for the show. 8. Facility Hours- This facility will have designated hours that will be as follows. Mondays through Fridays 6am-9pm Saturday and Sunday 6am-10pm These hours will be enforced. Any exceptions must be granted by the Lamar High School agriculture teachers. If students are given permission to enter the facility any other times than listed above, they must have a parent with them at all times. Violations of curfew could result in immediate eviction. 9. Student Projects- (Not Parent Projects) These projects are the responsibility of the students and not the parents. We ask the parents to support the students to the fullest extent, but these are the student's projects. 10. Animal Welfare- If the animal is not being properly care for, as determined by the FFA advisor, the student will be given a warning. After the first warning, the parent will be notified and the student will be informed that if another violation occurs, the student will have 48 hours to remove their animal or ownership will be transferred to Lamar FFA and sold at a local livestock exchange for market price. 11. Other Students' Projects- Do not handle or feed anyone else's project without permission from that person or Lamar agriculture teacher. If an animal needs feed or water, call one of the agriculture teachers and report it. 12. Fans- Do not turn another student's fan on or off. If a heifer is turned out to the pasture, turn your fan off. 13. Wash Rack- Wash animals at designated wash racks only. It is student's responsibility to clean the wash rack of any manure or trash. 14. Designated Manure Areas- Dump manure in designated areas only. Do not dump just outside the barn gates. 15. Professional Behavior- Students are expected to act in a professional manner at all times while at the facility. Any activities which endanger the health or physical well being of students, animals, parents, administrators, or advisors is strictly prohibited. 16. Proper Behavior while at the Barn- While at the FFA farm facility, keep your body language "quiet". This means no screaming, yelling, sudden moves, running, throwing things in the barn, etc. 17.Show Exhibitor Behavior- The projects are not "rodeo" animals. Absolutely no riding, tackling, roping, etc. of any animals will be tolerated. This behavior is detrimental to halter breaking and the health of the animal. 18. Stealing Will Not Be Tolerated- Anyone caught stealing is subject to immediate eviction and possibly criminal charges. *Stealing is feeding your animal feed or hay that you did not purchase without permission. It is your responsibility to purchase your own feed and hay-not anyone else's. "Borrowing" does not produce responsibility. 19. No Pets, No Exceptions- Absolutely no dogs or pets of any kind will be permitted at the FFA facility. NO EXCEPTIONS. 20. Flip Flops- Open toe shoes and flip flops are not permitted. 21. Prohibited Items- The possession and use of alcohol, tobacco, or nay illegal drugs is strictly prohibited. Guns of any kind are strictly prohibited. 22. Farm Work Days- All students using the facility for the FFA projects are required to work 15 hours per year at the scheduled workdays. This is in addition to the regular feeding and care of their animals. All other FFA students who are showing a plant or animal project (but not using the Lamar Farm facility) at the Lamar FFA School Show must work a minimum of 5 hours at the Lamar FFA farm facility. These are many workdays scheduled throughout the year. Any student who has not worked their minimum required hours, will not be allowed to show or sell their project at the show. Everyone is busy, and there will always be something else to do, but at some point, the student must make the workday a priority. 23. Animal Removal after Show Season- The exhibitor is to remove all market animals from the Lamar FFA farm after their respective market shows. Market animals shown at the Lamar School Show may not return to the barn after the show. Breeding projects that extend into another show season must receive permission to remain at the project center. 24. FFA Meetings Attendance- Any student showing a project in the Lamar School Show must attend 3 FFA meetings held throughout the school year. Attendance is recorded, and this rule will be enforced. 25. Problems and Chain of Command- When a problem or concern arises, the way to resolve it is by following the established "chain-of-command." Always begin with the supervising teacher. 1. Supervising teacher 2. Lamar CATE director 3. Principal 4. Central Office 26. Animal Death- If an animal dies at the facility, it is the exhibitor's responsibility to remove the carcass within two hours of being notified of death. If the carcass is not removed within two hours, this service will be provided at the expense of the owner of the animal project. If this expense is not paid, the exhibitor forfeits the privilege of using the farm facility in the future. 27. Transportation- Students and parents must arrange transportation to and from the FFA facility. 28. Eligibility of Heifers- Only registered heifers which are eligible to be shown at the major shows during the current school year are eligible to be kept at the Lamar Farm. At the end of the school year, if the heifer will remain eligible the following year, permission will be given to keep the heifer at the farm for another year, provided all the other requirements are met. (Student in good standing with Lamar FFA) In the case of graduating seniors, the student's heifer must be removed from the farm on or before the last day of school. If a student's heifer project has a calf, this does not make the heifer eligible to stay at the farm. If an FFA members wishes to show the female offspring of a heifer, it must be at least 6 months old, registered, weaned and have the approval of the agriculture teachers before it is moved back to the farm. 29. Terms, Conditions, and Consequences- Lamar High School reserves the right to remove any animal from the facility if any of the following conditions exist: 1. Animal abuse or neglect in any form 2. Diseased or infected animals 3. Students failing to observe rules 4. Animals not being housed for show purposes 5. Student is no longer involved in program 6. Any animal housed at the project center is not being shown under FFA If the student fails to abide by any of the above mentioned rules or guidelines, actions will be taken to remove the animal or ban any future FFA farm privileges. The student is subject to disciplinary action or fines for failure to comply with these rules.
