Philosophy Programme
(Full time training)
CURRICULUM
Aim of the education programme
The aim of the programme is to prepare students for pursuing philosophy as a profession and vocation. On the one hand, the programme offers basic knowledge regarding
both the European philosophical tradition as a whole and the major fields of philosophy on the other hand, it prepares the students for autonomous philosophical thinking,
and develops the abilities and characteristic skills necessary for such thinking. Furthermore, specialized training in philosophy has more than one aim. The most important
general aim is to produce educated, philosophically trained intellectuals, who are able to carry through the integrating role of philosophy, and thus, are able to reintegrate
the different fields of knowledge. This requires a philosophical approach to the scientific-technological background, as well as the philosophical handling of social-cultural
areas. As to contemporary philosophical trends and fields, it is especially the philosophy of mind, moral philosophy, and hermeneutics, which are most helpful for reaching
this goal. In a concrete sense, in the philosophy programme we train prepared teachers and qualified intellectuals for philosophy education in secondary schools, for
philosophical research and graduate education, as well as for the different social-cultural areas.
Conditions of obtaining a degree:
For obtaining a degree the student must have an intermediate „C” type language proficiency exam in one language, or must pass an intermediate final exam at the University
of Miskolc. Requirements may change according to the laws and regulations set by the goverment of the Hungarian Republic.
Content of the education programme:
Students participate in a 5-year specialized educational program, which includes the study of the history of European and Hungarian philosophy, as well as the following
disciplines: logic, metaphysics, epistemology, theory of science, philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, social philosophy and philosophy ofhistory (including
philosophy of law and political philosophy), ethics (including social ethics and ecological ethics), hermeneutics, philosophy of religion, and aesthetics.

All the comprehensive exams, preliminary exams, and courses ending with exam will be offered in every semester. However, the classes belonging to the courses ending with
exams will be offered only in those semesters indicated in the sample-curriculum. In the semester in which a course-units is offered without classes one can only take the
exam. (For example, in the case in which the student obtained the teacher’s signature in the previous semester, but did not take the exam.) Out of the the courses ending with
term grade the followings will be offered every semester: BTFTT204.; BTFIT234; BTFIT235; BTFTT237-239. Furthermore, in every semester at least 10 special seminars
will be offered, with code-numbers BTFIT240 and BTFTT240.
The sum-total of credits of obligatory course-units: 107 credit, out of which 93 are related to classes. The number of credits of elective courses: a sum-total of 21 credits.
Freely chosen course-units: a sum-total of 12 credits.
Proportion of practical and theoretical training: 41:59. Following the sample-curriculum, the lowest number of weekly hours is 4 (not taking into account the semester of
final exam), the highest is 12. The average number of weekly hours is 10. Number of exams per semester: 0-4. Number of credits that must be accomplished, per semester: 417, in the semester of the final exam: 27.
Conditions of submitting the degree thesis and of taking final exam: fulfilment of the requirements related to all the previous specialized and  depending on the coupling 
out of specialty or general-training course-units.
Degree thesis: 50-page essay, based on autonomous specialized research. The subject-matter of the thesis is to be proposed by the student and authorized by the appropriate
department. The degree thesis must give evidence that (1) the student is well prepared in the literature of the subject-matter, (2) that s/he knows and is able to use the relevant
set of philosophical concepts and specialized approaches, (3) that s/he is able to interpret and argue autonomously. The finished thesis must meet the formal requirements of

On the final exam the student must defend her or his degree thesis in front of the Final Exam Committee, and must answer questions on previously defined final exam
themes. As a basic rule, these themes correspond to the subject-matters of those course-units, that are most closely related to the subject of the degree thesis.
